Vet costs seem high

Being new to owning a beardie, I am a bit worried about Spike. I am not sure if starting to brumate or has parasites? He had a bit of rusty colored urate twice and is acting lethargic and not wanting to bask as much as normal and sleeping alot. Today he didn't eat his salad but ate some crickets. I called two different vets that specialize in exotics. For a office call/checkup and a fecal it is $150! What are others experience with vet costs? This is more than my dog and horse for the same exam.

He is probably just going through his natural cycle. As he is sensing the change in the season ,his metabolism is starting to slow down. He will become more lethargic and go off his food almost completely and he may eventually brumate (if he is an adult). You are correct that parasites can mimic these symptoms so its good to get that checked to rule it out. Those vets fees do sound rather high for just a fecal and checkup, but I dont know if thats the norm for where you live. The fecal alone could be done at a regular vets I guess, they are more than capable of spotting parasites. If he ever needs any specialist care though you will be stuck with those prices if that is all thats available. Sucks, but thats showbusiness folks!

Thanks, I am in Minnesota. I did find another reptile vet close to me and it will still be $125. I am going to keep my eye on him and still give baths to keep him hydrated. This am he was super slow and would eat a few crickets if they got close to him, otherwise no interest in hunting them down.

I think with us it was around $160 for the exam, bloodwork and fecal.

That $ sounds about right here in WI. Does he drink while in the bath? If he doesn't then he isn't getting the hydration as they get all the moisture from what actually goes in their mouth from the bugs and greens.
