Tomorrow I am going to New York city for two nights and will return Friday afternoon. I have a baby bearded dragon but I am not sure what to do with him while I go away. He has yet to eat any veggies and has eaten a few crickets and mealworms. I only have mealworms right now. I heard that you can't let crickets out in his cage because they will bite him, but I am wondering if mealworms can be left out for him to eat. He spends most of his time on his hammock basking so I don't think they could even get up there. I'm just not sure how to feed him. I also purchased a gel premix for my bearded dragon which I made today. I was thinking I could leave that in his cage with a lot of veggies before leaving. The thing is, I've had him for 3 days now and he hasn't touched his veggies. I've given him a small variety of them but he has just been eating crickets and as of last night, worms. He has only eaten a few too, so I'm a bit nervous that if I leave him with the veggies he won't eat them. He also didn't eat any of the gel mix today.

So I am just wondering what I should do and how I should leave him. I can't, unfortunately, get anyone to come to our house while we're gone. I do have all of his lights on timers, so I am not worried about those. I attached a picture of tank so you can use that to help respond. (I know I don't yet have a background, one is coming in the mail)

The left most light is just a heat lamp because I have a 75 gallon tank and the left side was very cold. The other two are a basking and a UVB light.

Oh boy. You really shouldn't leave a baby home alone for any length of time but it sounds like you are leaving today and don't have time to find someone. In the future, vets will do boarding if you bring a temporary set up for them. We have a reptile store in Chicago that boards. When ours were babies, we never traveled because we didn't have anyone to watch them. One year my boyfriend went on vacation with his family and I stayed home to take care of the critters. Even now that they are older, we don't leave them alone for anything longer than two full days.

Anyway, feed him as much as you can before you leave and leave a big leafy salad with no veggies or anything that will harden. Mealworms are real bad to feed them and should never be fed to them. You can leave crickets in a glass bowl. If you remove their back legs they can't jump out and as long as the bowl has smooth sides, they can't climb out. Try to get him to drink some water before you leave. He should be fine but in the future really try to find someone to watch him.

Don't stress about the background, I don't have one and they are fine. The only time I did have a background was when I got my first tank and the crickets used to hide behind it so I removed it.
