My local pet store said they would sell me a working colony with over a thousand roaches for 125.00..Might try your way first...

I'm in it for $90 and i have 65 roaches...its gonna be at least 70 days (probably more) for first babies...if they are selling u females that are already giving birth that's not a bad deal....i think where u can save money with roaches is the feed for them

Quick update on dubias...my temp is a little low...76°-83° in tub. Heat pad will be here soon. Found 5 dead smalls on their back...not sure if it was the cold, or not being able to flip over or something else. Fed 2 to dragon and she loves them. If smalls keep dying i'll feed them off and order some a little larger. All the large are alive.

Don't think it is your temps unless they dropped quickly, that's the range mine are and they do just fine.. little ones often get stuck on their backs and die so this is likely what happened.

Do you prevent this with some type of substrate or is it not worth it?

Just make sure you keep the frass (poop) that is what the small ones will hide in and the nymphs will also eat the frass (as it still holds nutrients)
It's best to allow it to get an inch or 2 under the egg crates. I let it get about an inch under the egg crate section but on the cold side where the food is I clear of frass (just push it to the egg crate side)
