So we bought this dragon as a newborn, and she was doing very well until about November of this year. We thought she might just be brumating or something, but she wasn't eating as much, and she was EXTREMELY lethargic. But this has gone on too long. She's been getting worse lately, and the vet suspects she might have Metabolic Bone Disease. She's been having twitches in her head, and she's been flaring her beard and knocking her head back, Sort of like she's trying to dislodge something stuck in her throat, but nothing's there.

Yesterday the vet gave us some Emerald Critical Care Carnivore food to try, and we've been giving her calcium syrup daily since November. The vet wants us to do $300 worth of blood tests, so before we do those I just wanted to get someone's advice here. Needless to say things really aren't looking good for Egypt. We put an extra basking lamp in her habitat (we were recommended to keep it at a steady 115 degrees (f). One thing I did notice is she perks up when outside in the sun. Could it be our UV bulb is bad?

Anyway, we're just trying to do anything to help this dragon, and would love your advice. Thanks!!

hi. sorry to hear about your kids issues. I hate it when these things happen. bulbs can decrease uv output over time - I believe it is generally recommended to replace them every 6 months. real sun is always best. what has her diet been up until November? is your vet a reptile specialist? I know $300 is a chunk of change, but I wouldn't want to wait too long. other members may have more to offer ---

A new fluorescent UVB tube is at the top of the list along with calcium with vitamin D. That should stop it from progressing. If she was brumating, she shouldn't have developed hypocalcemia. Did you have her checked for parasites when she started to slow down? Also, I had an ionized calcium test done on my gal to check her levels and it was nowhere near 300, it's possible that the vet wants to run a full lab which might not be a bad idea if you can afford it.

I would do the blood tests. Throwing her head back could also be a sign of star gazing. You will only find out what is wrong by doing the blood test.
Giving oral calcium should be helping. If it's not then you need to rule other things out.
