Bearded Dragon Egg

Hello all bearded dragon owners,

Our beloved family pet Billy passed away last night. She was actually a female but at the time when we bought her at 3 months old, this was hard to tell. We found out she was a female at around 6 months.

In 2019, she laid eggs 3 times, each time laying around 12-20 eggs. First time really scared us, watching her trying to push out each of the eggs looked so painful. She got through it and fully recovered after a couple of days.

On Christmas day, just as we were heading out to a family dinner we noticed that there was something coming out of her vent. We later went to an emergency vet for the time being and after finishing the surgery we were referred to a local vet that deals with reptiles.

She was fine for the next day but after that she prolapsed again more severely and we had to go to the vet we were referred to. We were told that a possible cause of her prolapse was her laying eggs multiple times. This time when she prolapsed part of her colon was being strangled by her previous stitches. We were told that she had a chance but she wasn't out of the woods yet.

Initially she recovered quite well and was walking around but around a week after, she began to start showing symptoms of sickness and struggled to walk. Only a few days after that she completely ceased to eat and became very pale. She died later that evening.

It was a tragic loss and if we had known, we would have found a vet that deals with reptiles and have her spayed so that she doesn't loosen her vent laying eggs.

TL;DR As soon as you can, find a vet that treats reptiles as well as getting female beardies spayed if you do not plan on breeding them so that they don't need to potentially experience this problem.

Enjoy and love your dragons they're awesome pets.

Rest in Peace, Billy - 01/05/2020. You will be dearly missed and always loved.
