Post-op concerns.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve been on here.

My beardie was found to have tail rot on April 10th. I took him to the vet, and after having him on antibiotics for the weekend he got the affected portion removed on April 14th.

I was not given more antibiotics following the surgery, only pain meds.

Now, 11 days later, he’s been eating more than he has in a long time, which is great! He’s been active, he’s even been in his first full shed in a long time too.

However, I’m concerned about his tail.

The doctor didn’t cut off as much as I thought he would, I thought he said more of the tail was dead but I wasn’t gonna question it.

It’s limp, and it’s red. I don’t know if this was a stain from surgery or a bruise/something else. He doesn’t seem to have feeling in it.

During this shed the scales near that end of his tail have peeled off, and the underneath is now red too like the bit I was worried about…
I don’t know if I should be worried about this. Hopefully this image showing the timeline is clear. Please advise!

I agree there is more to cut unfortunately. It's clear now because of the red showing and there's even a new 1/4" dead at the tip. I think another amputation is needed. Sorry that you have to deal with this again.

Here’s a video from today. It looks pretty bad. I can’t tell if this is his body trying to auto-amputate, if this is an infection, or there’s more dead tail than was removed.

Uh- oh, he may be biting it now. If you have raw honey, put a little bit on the open wound and then quickly get some more gauze over it and tape it up. Have the gauze + tape ready as soon as you put the honey on it. The sooner you can get more of it cut off the better since it's bothering him.

He’s not biting it, he may have been dragging it around his tank to cause the redness, I don’t know. The scales that came off there were the same feeling/texture as the rest of his shed, and came off easy.
