Is the red light bad? I was advised at the pet store to buy the red bulb, and to keep it on 24 hours. Should I be turning it off with the UV light at night and heating with a ceramic heat emitter?

Yes get rid of the red light they do not need it.. Use the UVB, a basking bulb and as long as the enclosure doesn't get below 65 at night you don't need additional heat as they need the cool down as they sleep it mimic's the natural environment. If it gets colder than that adding the CHE is the best option for heat with no light.
