I agree about labeling everybody but I have heard some really bad advice while at pet stores looking around. Some girl actually told a customer that Bearded Dragons live in a tropical environment and need humidity. I stepped in and told her she was wrong and she preceded to argue with me about it. I told the manager they shouldn't have have people giving advice when they have no clue. I only wonder how many other people she told that to. Another pet store employee told me Bearded Dragons live in the dessert and needed to be in sand. I think the forum is the best place for accurate information. To be fair many pet store employees I have talked to were very knowledgeable.

Believe me, i have heard of some bad ones too. and alot of the employees dont say anything because the store management only cares about the buck. i would literally spend atleast an hour talking a person through it all. My store is probably the only one in the county that actually genuinely cares about our animals.

Just because you had some bad experiences with pet store employees does not mean all of them are stupid. They don't deserve that. As someone who used to be a pet store employee, i took a lot of pride in helping customers take home a new beardies and setting them up with everything they needed. Now, you are completely entitled to your opinion but please dont slander mine just because you dont agree.

A lot of people advise to not count on pet store employees advice as the only source of information. Many pet stores hire practically anyone and as a result lots of bad advice is given out and animals suffer. That isn't to take anything away from individuals who do pride themselves in giving out proper advice and go the extra mile to make sure animals receive proper care.

Yes, many pet store employees are a wealth of garbage information. Zaiden, you were a diamond in the rough. Good employees are few and far between. Your customers were lucky to have you.

Let's not get too off track here! We're here to help BDNewbie and their new baby.

We just gave her its 1st bath. We are going with "her" for now :). When I say we, I mean myself and my 11 year old Daughter. 1st time for us each to pick her up too! We had been so nervous because we think she is so fragile and don't want to hurt her. But we feel so better now. She sat still in our hands and had a nice poop in the bath right away. I scooped it out.

Thank you again everyone for all the reassuring words and advice. We are feeling much more confident now.

Btw - 1st night NOT using the red night light. Temp dropped to 62 degrees. I got up and checked in the middle of the night. Should I add a CHE at night? If so what wattage? We dont want it to get too warm?

I think a 60 watt is good for a 20 gallon tank. That should keep it around 70.

I use one of those ceramic heat bulbs to keep mine warmer at night. I also use it all day during the winter when the house is colder. When mine poops right away in the sink I take him right out, empty all the water and put fresh water in to take a longer bath. I did this every day when he was a baby but now I only do it a couple times a week.

Thank you EVERYONE!!! My day ended up feeling much more reassured than it started. Got another basking bulb on the way home and we are at 114 Basking, 90 warm area and 77 in the cool side. No more water in tank, no more red light at night and she/he ate 17 small crickets in a 10 minute feeding time. Will grab some collard greens over the weekend but will try not to stress over it eating them. Will be patient. Going to give it first bath tomorrow.

5 Minutes after eating got this pic. Makes my heart melt. Someone seems content.

I am late to the party here but you have been given some good advise. Just want to correct one thing and then get scientifical on you (if that is a word LOL!). Basking temp should be 107, 110 at the most 114 is a little too high. Now as far as the colored lights at night, the reason why you shouldn't use them is because they have a gland on top of their head (we call it the 3rd eye) that helps them find where the warm sun is and through that gland they see shadows. So this helps them also know if a predator is coming to get them like a bird. This is why when you pick them up, you should always scoop your hand under their front legs and gently support their back legs with your other hand. Reaching from them overhead is going to make them think you are trying to eat them! This brings us back to the colored lights at night, they see all spectrums of light that we can't even see, so a light over their head will cause them to see shadows and think something is hunting them, thus disrupting their sleep.
