How does he know I’m here?

My BD, Bongo knows that I’m there even if he can’t see me. My mom and I did experiments (he only eats when no ones watching him), where we both hid out in the hallway and looked through the door crack. He just stared at the door until we left. How does he know we’re there? Can he hear our heartbeats or something?
