is there a general rule of thumb of watts to gallons/height?
It really depends on the basking spot you are using. If your basking spot is low then you may need a higher wattage bulb to get the basking temperature to where it needs to be. If you have a high basking spot you may need a lower wattage. Even just a few inches can make a difference.
