Ok, so many of you buy crickets from the store weekly like i still do(even though i also use roaches) and many of you shop at petsmart and petco.

I personally liked petsmart better for a long time but now I have sent their corporate a complaint.

Over the past six months i have noted the size of their "large" crickets go from one inch or 3/4 an inch adult crickets, to maybe 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in size yet the same price.

so now we have to feed our beardies even more, costing us more money. im fed up with it, i tried to talk to the store manager about it and he said he cant do anything about it so i went over his head and sent the text below to their corporate. If you are no longer happy with the size or your crickets i would say to send a message to them as well. I will be keeping updates on the emails they send me to resolve this issue and if not properly resolved i will take action to make sure people stop shopping there.

"Dear petsmart. I have been a long time shopper at your store, spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I bought (rescued) a bearded dragon from your store a year ago in march and have spent around $700 on the first set up and hundreds more over the year in crickets and other needs to keep a healthy bearded dragon.

Over the past six months I have noted the size in your “large” crickets has gone from 3/4 inch/1 inch in length, wings, and fully adult crickets, to piss poor, deathly looking crickets who don’t even measure between ¼ inch and 1/ 2 inch. That’s hardly bigger than the small! Now I went from spending around 50 dollars a month in crickets to 70 because they no longer feed my bearded dragon right.

I know you buy them from a supplier who grows them and sends you them. But there must be product control. You cannot continue this, if this problem is not fixed not only will I take my business elsewhere to petco (which has large crickets) but I will post on every reptile forum, facebook, twitter, tumblr, and your website to not shop at your store for anything reptile related much less crickets. I have had trubble in the past and kept silent but this is the very food the animals you sell eats!

Someone buys a Chinese water dragon from you guys and it grows to 4-5 feet long, do you think a half inch crickets going to fill him up? No. I have a bearded dragon who is almost two feet long and still growing and he needs food, not snacks.

I await your reply"

WOOHOO!! Absolutely LOVE it!! You go Dude!! I haven't been to my Petsmart since the end of October when my Spike went into brumation and he is still sleeping. I am hoping that more people will email Petsmart corporate. I did last year about the deplorable conditions of their bearded dragon viv. The manager did call me and said he would fix it....yeah right....such BS!! Your email was good and to the point. Hope you get an answer soon!!

Way to stand up for yourself and reptile lovers all around! I personally dislike petsmart because their "pet specialists" are so ill informed on their pets. I read a pamphlet while shopping for my bearded dragon, which contains basic information, and confused the sales associate when asking questions about basking and diet and whatnot. The people who work there should not be in there at all

Good job, not everyone I know stands up to them like this. I do not have a Petco or Petsmart I do however have a nice reptile shop, that's all but good job and I do hope they get back to you and tell you they will change their crickets.

I got 3 emails in one day from them about the matter. The store manager should be calling me in a day or so.

I would go to petco but they have had the past 3 shipments of crickets show up all dead. So I had to buy more of the "large" cricks from petsmart.

I hope we can fix this issue. it would just be a matter of ordering from another cricket company. they buy them online just like we can.

Oh. I've gone to Petsmart once and some associate said I was feeding my bearded dragon too much crickets. (She was a juvenile at the time.) I told them that babies and juveniles eat more than adult bearded dragons and she was a juvenile.

I now feed my bearded dragon 4-12 crickets once a day and salads twice a day. Salads moreso than crickets.

How old was your bearded dragon when he/she was eating less cricks and more veggies. Mine does not eat many different kinds of vegetation, mostly mustard greens and kale.

She started around a year and half.

When I went to feed her some crickets for her P.M. feeding, two hours before bedtime, she didn't want them. I figured, okay. She's not wanting them. But she did eat her all of her greens. Since then, I've stopped giving her crickets in the PM. She doesn't look around for them anymore in the PM. She looks for them in the A.M. feeding. If I don't give her enough, she'll stare into the container and then look at me, and then look at the container. (She wants more.) After that, she'll look up at me and not her container or walk away from her container.

Sometimes, I'll give her a couple of superworms in the PM as a snack after dinner.

We have a PetSmart here. I complained in the store that their small/medium crickets are all TINY and their large are super large! My BD was eating upwards of 40 crickets a day because small/medium translates to small, no medium. How about a medium? I told them I may order online myself. For now I am feeding him wax worms and crickets. I may order online, but I'm not sure I can keep a thousand crickets alive.

I had 244 crickets once and the females ended up dying and looking for places to lay their eggs. So I presented them a container to lay their eggs. All of the females started laying. (I tried to keep the eggs moist, but that was hard to do when they kept drying out. After they laid eggs, there were massive deaths and less crickets.)

Then the Petland I go to closed it's doors for several weeks for a change in management. I went to another Petland. Half the crickets I got there died on the trip home and there were more deaths than I can count. Poor Allie was so unsatisfied. *Now I know that not all petstores are alike.*

I stopped buying crickets from pet stores period. I used to buy my first beardie's crickets in bulk from the breeder I bought him from but if I ever ran out and needed an emergency stop, I'd always go to Petco/Petsmart. He ended up getting parasites not long after, and a few months later he passed away from something unknown. :( Bought my new baby this year and put him on roaches, but the moment I fed him crickets (just for a treat) he got parasites not even a week later. He went through 2 rounds of treatment to get rid of them since the vet said he had a huge infestation. I'll never buy crickets or even mealworms/waxworms from these pet stores again because all of them end up being sick or dead.
Don't even get me started on those poor beardies for sale. The smallest one I've seen was maybe 2 inches big... I can't believe these pet stores sell them that young, and the crickets they feed them are way too big. They don't even get proper salads.

I used to buy crickets from a small Mom and Pop (Small chain petstores ran by familes.) pet store. That is until the day that Allie got pinworms, I started to look to her bugs. When I asked the vet what could be the cause of her pinworms, she told me that it was based on my husbandry skills. I asked her if it was possible from another source AKA feeders. She didn't think feeders could give pinworms. When I went back to the Mom and Pop store for my regular 100 crickets plus 5 super worms, I found out the source from the pinworms right off the bat. Think about a dirty cricket bin and a dirty superworm bin filled with gnats. (If you think about this, gnats don't grow inside the bins, they come from the outside. Ta DA! The crickets and superworms were the culprit. I no longer go to this store at all and go to Petland I go to is cleaner and they guarantee their crickets. They had a manager who wanted me to breed Allie and sell him the hatchlings. I wasn't going to breed Allie and I didn't plan on breeding her. (She's like my child.)

That's horrible.

When I went to feed the crickets, I always check on Allie to make sure she's sleeping. My child decided to stay awake and was looking out of her blankets. When I picked her up, she gave the biggest smile she could give me. (I guess she felt she didn't spend enough time with me.) LOL. But she sure spent an hour running around my room after her bathroom business. :D

So Spike's starting to come out of his brumation....

I go to a reptile shop not far from me-Germ; may know the place and the crickets are always gut loaded there before you buy and you can buy as many or as little as you want. I usually get 300-every 2-days and then some. But my die off's have been very little. At 1-point their mediums were very small almost tiny and i asked why-Their answer was supplier. So probably all of us went threw small crix; and as i said they are only a teaser for my babies. If i had die offs i would not buy there. And i don't buy from retail shops as i have seen the crix; in them little cups-no wonder they die-no room to move except to die.-Bella-river-7

The other Petland I went to gave me a 100 crickets in a small container with a mesh air hole. Well, I made them put fifty in a fish bag with some egg crate cartons. (They still died even when I got them home and into a bigger tank.) They had died on the trip home. I won't ever go to the other Petland for my crickets. They just can't be trusted because they tried to tell me how to give calcium supplements. I didn't feel like arguing but you know what they told me? They told me she only needed Calcium with D3 once a year, then they changed their story to once a month per a year.

I have a Petco where I am and I will go buy 50 crickets every few days and keep then in a bucket with a six pack bottle carrier for them to climb up. Just put some greens down in the bottom for them to feed. If my Beardie doesn't eat them within 3 days, I will just freeze what is left for whenever I need them. I don't really ever have any die offs in mine

Well I understand your complaints and agree. PetSmart and PetCo don't always know what's best for the animals and their feeders/food. It drives me insane, especially given how much money we spend. However, I've found other ways around their idoicy. If your walmart sells crickets, I'd suggest buying in bulk there and gut-load with different foods other than oranges for the first 24 hours. Or if you have some bait shops, same thing. Also, there's a place (local for me), that sells crickets and other insects at a really great price! I can buy 500 adult crickets for about 12.00. They're "Southern Wholesale Crickets". So if you're in need of saving money, I'd definitely choose them! They have been doing this business for a long time and know what they're doing.

Here's the link if you'd like to check them out, and for anyone in need of feeders for their reptiles :)

When we first got Dudley we bought crickets from PJs stupidly and they came in small plastic containers half dead when you get home. Now we buy them from Ruffins, a small pet shop and we have not had a problem since.
