It's good for plants, but I wouldn't use it as a substrate for an animal.

I dont recommend loose substrate at all--- especially for babies-- some textured NON adhesive shelf liner cut to the size of the tank NO grooves in it too hard to get the poop out clean w/ vinegar/water 50/50 wipe down w/ a wet dish towel or cloth--
