Dex's Eye Doing Something Weird

I noticed last night that one of Dex’s eyes is doing something weird. The bottom half of his right eye is dropping slightly. It’s not too noticeable and hasn’t been doing this long as I haven’t noticed it before and I handle him every day. I googled it and one site said he may have an eye infection. Cripes! Could he have some dust or something in it from roaming? Do I try and flush it out with water? Wait it out or take him to the vet? He’s still in bed right so I’ll try and get a pic when his lights come on and he starts moving around. Anyone else have this happen? Just was wondering what was going on and what to do?

Geez, Investigating further it said it could be dehydration, lack of vitamin A, eye infection, or even parasites. Gah! WTHeck!

As he's not deydrated (no symptoms and he's has the right ratio of white in his poo with right consistency) it might be one of the others. He gets his calcium and vitamins on schedule along with a variety of salads and protein. Not sure it's vitamin A deficiency, but I don't know for sure. Yipes! Parasites are a possibility, but he's had them before and he's not showing the same symptoms as then. Which doesn't mean squat, I know. My other option is an eye infection, which should be treated by vet. So I'm scheduling him an appointment when the office opens this morning.

Hmm . . . well above symptoms were for droopy eye lids looks like. Not sure I'm getting the right info. Sigh. His is the bottom lid. Kinda makes the one eye look like a basset hounds. All sad looking. I'll get a pic when he starts moving around.

Thanks for asking JJ. It's about the same. Looking at it I can't tell if it's just the way his eye is or if it's something serious. It's slightly different than the other eye, but only a tiny bit. It doesn't look swollen and isn't red or anything. He seems to be having no issues with it. He's acting normally. I want to think his appetite is slightly down, but can't tell as he'll eat the dubia right up and is eating his salads, but is still refusing most of his crickets. He'll eat one or two and then stop. When I try to give him more dubia after trying the crickets he won't eat the dubia either. He'll turn his head away (with his nose in the air I might add). I think the cricket refusing is just because he was limited to them for a bit and is sick of them. He'll pig out on the dubia his next feeding and the cycle repeats. lol Yesterday afternoon I didn't even offer the crickets . . . just let him have the dubia. He's running quite low now and I might have to run and get more before tomorrow.

I didn't get a chance to get a pic yesterday. I had meeting after meeting and when I finally did have an opportunity my battery needed to be charged. I did contact the vet's office, but was unable to talk with her as she was with a patient. He does have an appointment Monday afternoon. It was the soonest they could get him in without it being an emergency. Until then all I can do is keep and eye on it. Not even sure if there is an issue. Could be just the way his eyes are developing as he's growing and I'm just be paranoid.?.? Dunno. I'll definitely get a pic today. Only have one meeting scheduled.

I totally get the worry! Some days I look at my beardie and feel like her eyes are changing? Then I think maybe I am just going mad! What are we like  They definitely own us haha. Well I hope there are no issues - in regards to going off the crickets, it seems sometimes they just decide they don’t like something anymore, fussy little things! x

With you on the going mad. hahahaha I look and think "No there's something going on" and then he'll turn his head and his eye shifts and I think, "wellllll . . . maybe not . . ." then turn, eye shift . . . "welllllll maybe yes." Geeezzz, nough to drive you insane. Dex is one of the spoiled, fussy ones for sure. Why I'm not too worried he isn't eating the crickets as long as he's eating his salads and dubia. Just placed an order for bfl to get on his good side. Yup, totally own us! hahahaha They should be here tomorrow.

He thinks I'm insane anyway. Last night, I had him nose to nose with me bobbing my head from one side to the other trying to compare his eyes. His head was slightly turning along with mine as I moved and his whole look said, "WTHeck are you doing? Why are you moving like that? Are you broken?" hahahahaha

So he's been awake for about half hour and he's not completely cooperating yet. He's crankly til he's had his morning cup of joe. JK I was able to get pics. Sorry one is darker than the other as it's facing his shady side.

Here's the right eye that looks suspicious to me. See the little dip in the bottom lid closest to his nose?

Here's a pic of his left eye. I don't see that dip. It's not as pronounced.

Am I being a hypochondriac and seeing issues when there are none?

Gosh, I really wouldn’t know! I mean, it doesn’t look alarming, but if it’s changing or wasn’t like this before I understand why you’d wanna figure it out!

I can't tell either. It's disconcerting. I'm not sure it's just the way his eyes are or if there's something wrong or what. lol I never noticed it before now, but he's growing and changing rather quickly. Hoping someone has a beardie who has the same eye look and it's just that he has asymmetrical eyeballs. lol

Hmmm, it does look similar to Dex's. Interesting. Probably just the way his eye is and hopefully nothing is wrong. I'll find out Monday. It doesn't seem to bother him at all and he reacts with that eye the same as he does the other. Phew! Thanks Skybug makes me feel a little better about it.

Dex is technically my second beardie, but basically my first as I rescued/adopted Seymore and he was with me only a short time. Just long enough for me to get bit with the beardie bug, even with the health issues and vet expenses that came with him. :) I lucked out and Dex's vet is a reptile specialist (herpetologist I guess is what you'd call her). She primarily see's the reptiles while her partners in the clinic tend to the other types of animals. Bad news is the clinic is a little over an hour's drive away from me. Gah! Found her when I adopted Seymore. I took him to a local "supposed" reptile vet (not my regular vet as they don't do reptiles) twice the week I adopted him and he couldn't tell me what was wrong with him. He sent me to the specialist and she immediately ran some tests and took x-rays. Didn't take long for her to find the tumor (she labeled it something, but I was upset at the time and honestly don't remember what she called it). She sat down with me and explained that in his current condition, stressed and in pain as he was, that she really couldn't guarantee survival after or even during surgery, but that she would do her best if that's what I opted for. I couldn't do that to him. We opted to euthanize and she agreed it was the best choice. I cried like a baby all the way home. But, like I said I got the beardie bug. lol Wasn't too long after that I adopted Dex. She's seen Dex twice since I got him. Once for a wellness check (he passed with flying colors) and once when he got parasites (she had him cleared up in no time). Dex is in good hands. :)

i feel you, steffern will do things sometimes and it makes me worry, then the next day shell be bouncing around all fine and it makes me a lil crazy , im sorry about seymore you did the right thing Not allowing him to suffer, i was raised with the farm mentality so Ive had to put down a number of animals, its the last loving act you can do :’( , im shure dex is fine but its good your able to find a vet, theres so many vets where i live its hard to find a good one who knows what they’re actually talking about, i usually end up leaving giving them advice, (im stupid dont get me wrong) but these vets i swear , its so hard with lizards and small animals, really all the vets can do is tests offer medicine and give u they’re opinion, surgery really isnt an option on animals so small (like open heart surgery on a hamster? Cmon,...(im not a fan of exotic vets if u haven’t figured that out lol) yours sounds wonderful though.

So update on Dex. Vet says his eye is not an infection. There's no redness, puffiness, or drainage, and reaction to stimuli is normal. She couldn't see any debris. Phew! She said she can see where the lower lid is drooping a tiny bit, but she wasn’t concerned because it's such a minute bit. Suggested it might be just the way his eyes are developing. She told me to keep an eye on it and if I was at all concerned to give her a call. Otherwise Dex is a healthy beardie. :)

But . . . got him home and he was a little unhappy about the vet visit. He sulked in his hide for a while before he finally came out and basked for a bit before bedtime. Since then my guy is being weird. Wednesday morning I checked on him after his lights came on and he was still in his hide. A bit later I went to give him breakfast and he was still in there, though he had moved positions. Since Wednesday he has spent about 90% of his time in his hide sleeping. Has eaten next to nothing and done very little basking. He did came out for a bit yesterday: basked, ate a few pieces of salad and a few bsfl, did a tiny poop, and then went back into his hide. He hasn't been out since. I keep checking on him and it just looks like he's sleeping. He's responds to my touch, if a bit crankily. Lol I did manage to get a few drops of water into him when he came out yesterday, but he wasn’t happy about it. Looking at him he’s just a chunky as he always is, so I’m not seeing any weight loss. Think he’s in early stages of brumation? Should I try and steer him out of it? He’s only about 10 ¾ - 11 months old. Thoughts?

What are you using for substrate? It could be a genetic thing too- get some saline regular no contact lense stuff rinse his eye out--- post a pic of it please- is there any watery stuff is it closed shut?

Posted pics earlier in thread. He's been to the vet and got the all clear. No watery stuff and no drainage. No it's not closed and he's not favoring it in any way. Post above update and all clear from vet. :)

Do you by chance have a T5HO or equivelent with a 10.0 bulb within 18 inches of his basking area without anything blocking the rays? My baby bearded dragons eye got irritated because i used my uvb lamp improperly same eye same deal as you. The T5HO with a 10.0 should be obstructed by mesh on a 40 gallon breeder if you want to mount it 9 inches to 15 inches range. The reflector on the fixture almost doubles the focus power of the bulb and the mesh blocks it by 40-50 % so it cancels out to being similar to just the bulb under the mesh. Complicated to learn but easy in practice according to current knowledge. New owner but I had to solve this eye problem here first so im sharing my experience. I hope this helps also Saline USP or turtle eye drops can be used to flush eyes in the future and seemed to work fine for my girl. I panicked on day 3 when she woke up and didn't want to open her eye I feel horrible fixed the issues after a ton of struggle and digging through bad information online. I have a UVB Radiometer on the way to ensure it's 100% accurate
