Added bonus: Once you have a producing colony you won't have to buy anymore :) I only buy supers and treats now..

That sounds so amazing! I've only had Spyra for a little over 2 weeks and I can not even begin to tell you how much my gf and I have already spent on food. Its seriously insane lol. The cheapest place around here it's like 15 bucks for 150 crickets, and she eats anywhere from 60-80 a day! (we call her fatty patty lol). At first we totally thought "we can just go to the pet store once in a while it's no big deal" boy were we in for a surprise. So once we get a feel for the dubias I definitely think starting a colony is something me and her need to discuss.

Oh I know I was once where you are right now... spent ALOT of $ on dubia from petco 30 of them at a time sigh....OMG the best thing I ever did was start my colony.. so once your ready I can help info wise.. the hardest part is figuring out how many she's going to eat per day as you really have to leave the main colony alone for 6-8 weeks except for food and water....other than that you leave them be. so you have 2 tubs 1 colony of breeders then 1 feeder tub

If it will save money In the end and allow her to eat well, I think it will be more than worth it. I'll just have to get over my fear of them. At one point if someone would've told me I'd be able to pick crickets up I would thought they were nuts! So I know i will eventually come around. Just need to put my big girl panties on. It sounds pretty simple. I'm sure it's work to be put in but if it saves me trips to the pet store every 3 days I'm in! We will try them out and eventually come back for some helpful words of wisdom and work on getting a set up for them.

hahaha I know just what you mean!! lol had crickets 5+ years because of a rescued bird (house wren) oh man I was getting 1000 every month shipped sigh would have never thought.... Then in came Izzy (my female) and learned about dubia my first shipment I thought I was going to DIE!! lol words of advise open the box and the fabric bag over your container or in your tub lol because you will toss a few hehe and they are fast.. BUT you will get over the creep factor for the most part, I actually think they are pretty cool and kinda fasinating..

Sorry if im repeating anybody Forget about crickets I tried and they stink and like to be cannibals, climb and are very noisy when you hit around the 1 cricket mark let alone a 1000 of them. only reason I tried crickets was petshop asked if I could supply them so I saw pound signs. I soon scrapped the idea after about 1 week and fed them to my beardies. I don't use any heat source however here in uk the breeding slows during Nov to March but dosnt stop this year if i get greedy i might add a small heat mat and stat but with roaches living 18 month plus it causes no concern to my critters I'm feeding them to.
Don't forget locusts they are extremely easy also and breed quickly too. Another advantage of breeding your own is you end up with a full range of sizes.
I have no giant size containers for them they take up no room at all really. However with roaches I do keep my breeders separate from my feeders using 2 x 30 x 15 x 15 cm tubs ( not clear but black they love the dark).
Its the future for herpers giving me alot more money to spend on my collection hehe.
