Brumation no substrate?

hello all, I was thinking about beardie brumation today and was wondering if they could brumate without substrate? We have three of ours on laminate flooring in the tank and last winter they were in dirt. Just wondering if they can brumate without substrate? (I know this is an early question, was just wondering!) thanks
