Finally picked up my juvenile bearded dragon, Ragnar, from the local reptile shop and today I noticed he’s got mites, anyone give me any advice on what to do? The reptile shop, Sutton pets and exotics, didn’t do any checks other than checking our set up they just stuffed him into a container the size of your average take away tub and told us onions are a good thing to feed them which from all the research I’ve been doing onion is a massive no go. I’m glad we’ve got him since I’m prepared to give him the care he needs but I’m really annoyed that they didn’t seem to look after the dragons properly but judge potential owners on their ability.

Sorry this has turned into a moan, I’ve given him a bath and using a baby toothbrush, so it’s nice and soft, got a lot of the mites off that I could see but I know that’s not going to be good enough, I’ve also scrubbed every inch of his enclosure and decor I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice on what else to do in the mean time since there are no vets open tomorrow.

I’ll be honest I’m dreading the vet incase the reptile shop really hasn’t been looking after their animals properly and there’s more than just mites wrong.

Anyway thank you all in advance, I’ll attach some pictures of him just to show what he looks like, no mite pictures as I’ve been busy cleaning and trying to figure out what to do since I noticed them.

Let me ask a friend of mine about those mites--- these people telling you to feed onions to a dragon should not be in business-- please feed salads like collards mustard turnip or kale- greens - everyday I will post a website for nutrition- I will get back w/ you

read this link and let me know if it helps

Nutrition website --- ignore the kale thing its a good staple feeder
http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html
I would get some good disinfectant to kill the mites --- you can get some F10 off of Walmart its really good but spendy its a concentrate and you mix -- it will last a long time --- but you will need to kill whats in the tank now --Can you point out the mites are they red?

The mites were black, I don’t have any pictures of them since as soon as I saw them clumped in the areas highlighted in the two pictures I’ve taken from google and drew a ring on I got him right in a warm bath and got as many as possible off. There are literally the odd one tiny one on him now since I’m guessing I missed them with them being so small.

They were sitting under the folds of his neck, looked a bit like the black shoulder spots at first glance but the black shoulder spots don’t move. In the bath I did notice more under his left forearm in his armpit basically but not as many as on his neck. It was both sides of his neck not just the side pictured. I’m not vet so I don’t feel comfortable prodding and poking some areas so I did look around his vent and there wasn’t any there that were immediately evident but like I said I didn’t feel comfortable prodding and poking. I’m pretty happy with my ability with his food but I’m never going to say no to more knowledge and it was only walking home with my girlfriend that it registered that they said give him onion and I said to my girlfriend I’m sure that advice is wrong.

Thank you for the nutrition information that will give me more ideas for variety

That really sucks, can u picture one of the mites for me please , i need to know which kind were looking at, most sites and information I found says keep washing, put a dot , and i mean a SINGLE DROP of dawn soap in the bath water next time, keep him in a plastic tote till he doesn’t have anymore , your final frontier will be his ears ,neck crevices, armpits, legpits, and vent , he may need a vet check up cause it’s possible the mites giving him something, it’s unlikely if the mite count is low, but if he was already weak from being not cared for properly its a possibility.

Did you go to the link I posted-? Soak him in the betadine solution make it look like a weak tea- and your going need to disinfect that tank in order to get rid of them-

Yeah we’re definitely going to get him checked by a vet, we’ve got a friend who’s a vet not a reptile vet but I asked for a little advice then she recommended a vet check up by a reptile specialist just incase mites are the tip of the iceberg. Think she is thinking intestinal parasites and a general check up since if they’re giving bad advice at the reptile shop he came from then I’d bet his care there was sub par.

Yes-- you can try your local pharmacy as well-- as skybug suggested maybe a smaller tote like a 20 gallon for now but you will need to set lights up.carefully so you don't catch it on fire if it's plastic
Here is a pic of a hospital tank for you -- you can set the tank up like this or if you have a 20 gallon tank would work as well but a tote is good

This would work till you get the mites gone --

The vet friend did say take a sample with us. We’ve got the F10 ready to use stuff simple just because the concentrate was out of stock but will be getting the concentrate when we’re running low just for value for money’s sake
