Beardie who died from congenital kidney failure

We bought a young beardie fom a veteran owned pet store. I failed to research appropriately. He never ate quite right and was always small. At the 9th month mark he started to fall, turned black, and we noticed swollen limbs.
By the time we got an appointment for a reptile specialist, we found out that our baby had congenital kidney failure (limbs swollen) and coccidia. We treated him with meds but a week later he went into respiratory failure and we had to put him to sleep. It was horrific.
We now have a new dragon who is thriving, but I am so paranoid about kidney failure happening in our future.

If it's congenital there isn't much you can do about it- I am sorry you went thru that- it's heartbreaking to see that happen to them - what you can do is have your surface basking temps and uvb on par- No coils for uvb's they are a health hazard - digital probe thermometers are the most accurate for your temps-- that is about all you can control besides their diet of coarse but those things I posted are crucial-

Thanks Ms. Sadie. We are still trying to get through it. We have a new baby with a t5 uvb about 8 inches from basking area.
He is growing well, and happy, but at the back of my mind, I am so fearful that he may get sick.
We got him from a very responsible breeder.
He is 16 weeks old and weighs about 100 grams, 11.5 inches.
He eats about 4-6 collard leafs per day and multiple bsfls.

What are his surface basking temps and how are you taking them? The UVB is on top of the screen or in the tank --- distance and placement will be determined by your screen

about 8 inches from his t5, basking temps are about 105-110. He is eating about 8 small leaves of collard greens a day, about 5 BSFLs, and about 80-90 dubias per day. He looks happy and healthy...

That is a lot of dubias- what size are you feeding? Is the uvb unobstructed?

The uvb is through a large screen, and the dubias are "small". Half the size between his eyes...I probably need to bump up the size of the dubias to "medium".

Yes increase the size- ok so your good on the uvb for a wide hole screen -
