hi we have just come from a vet trip with our young beardie as we thought she was impacted/constipated, the vet x rayed her....nothing there but gave us liquid parrafin and some isotonic powders. the opinion is she is in brumination. b4 we gave her the meds she finally went to the loo which was mostly liquid and we noticed blood drops coming from her rear end. my son is now worried again and I have tried to explain that sometimes wen u are constipated you can pass blood thru straining. has anyone had a similar experience with their beardie. we gave her the meds but she was getting really angry and we ended up with more on us than in her as she was gritting her teeth hard. she is now sulking!

hi Bill...we took our zilly to a vet who said she was an ok weight, x rayed her and said she was clear and gave us some liquid parraffin to give her just incase and charged my son £84. Over the last 2 weeks Zillys health deteriorated further and in desperation I took her to another vet who happened to be a herp vet and bred beardies. As soon as he saw her he asked her age and what we fed her, we told him everything the supplier set us up with and said we dusted her food with calcium....he then asked us if we knew about vitamin D and vitamin supplements and we told him we were not advised of this when we first bought her....his diagnosis was metabolic calcium/vitamin deficiency and gave her anti biotics and a syringe of a potent vitamin D solution, we came away with an immense feeling of guilt but a glimmer of hope But sadly Zilly passed away over night ( last night) and today we are reeling with shock and guilt as she was our first beardie and we loved her the most. We are all beside ourself with grief but also angry as the suppliers should have told us we needed vitamins and VitD and the first vet was obviously not au fait with lizards as we had been told. Our second beardie Rocco is a recent edition and altho we like him we dont yet feel bonded with him as we were (and still are with Zilly), I am hoping in time this alters as my son is distraught and thinking of giving up on beardies as this has really knocked him for 6 and he feels totally responsible as this could have been prevented had we have been furnished with the info regarding vitamin d supplements.

Thanks richard, we really thought we had got it right, a lot of the info out there is all overseas...as out vet said...what works in australia doesnt always work here, we need more heat and light for our reptiles because of our climate and sadly uk stockists dont have what they have in other countries, then there is the cost...they push out cheap vivarium stuff that is barely adequate, in fact he was quite cross about it all. All of that tho does not help us come to terms with the fact that essentially we feel we murdered out own beloved pet thru ignorance.....but having said that if we didnt know then we are not totally responsible but that doesnt ease the pain.

thankyou...when we have absorbed the loss and its not so raw I will check in again...i just hope we can love rocco as much as we did zilly..but zilly will always be the most loved as she was the first, have to say I am concerned the others dont face the same fate. my youngest has 2 babies and hopefully we can now step up the vitamin regime to keep them healthy....its not too late for them.
