So I know I may have talked about this before. But I’m pretty convinced my bearded dragon has a URI. I have heard clicking sounds coming from his mouth , his breathing is heavy outside of his tank, and he yawns and mouth gapes much more. I have booked an appointment but it’s in 2 weeks and I’m not sure if that safe for that long. I have called many VCA near me but there all booked till July. I’m at a loss is there anything I can do to ease the pain. Also, is the a way I can show you guys a video of his breathing for reference? The last thing I wanted to mention is he is eating, pooping and very active, So I’m hoping I still have time.

What is the humidity in the tank? Basking temps? You can record a video on YouTube then post the link- any extra saliva ? Mucous coming out of the nose? Bubbles in the mouth? Yawning is not a sign of RI-- post a pic of him w/ the mouth gaping

I didnt hear anything --- is she eating? Does she have any mucous or discharge out of the mouth or nose ? Any bubbles in the mouth? Make sure your using a good UVB NO coils and have good basking temps-- temps in the tank should be 95-100 for a juvenile dragon and being taken w/ a digital probe thermometer -- humidity in the tank optimal 30-50% no higher than 70% and no lower than 20%--- it is best to have a digital probe hygrometer placed on the back center wall of the tank - it will read the whole tank then

He’s eating normally I was more worried about his breathing. Is it too heavy? The only sound I’ve heard is a clicking sound.

They sometimes breath heavy when they get excited--- does he breath heavy all the time ? Or only in the tank ? Outside of the tank - he looks pretty energetic in the video --- if hes got a RI going on I cant tell --- How often is the clicking sound ?

His breathing is constant in and out of the tank but not the clicking. I booked a vet appointment just in case. I think I might just be paranoid. Thank you for the feedback!

Ok they should take X rays to see if there is fluid in the lungs for a RI and blood work to see if there is a infection going on -- please do not let them do a Enema they often end up in disaster -- if they dont find anything do not let them put him on medication out of the blue they should not be prescribing medication JUST BEACAUSE -- let me know how it goes please

I hear the clicking, it’s almost like tapping on a tupperwear noise? Or a heart beat? Everything sounds and looks normal to me, did he have a fall or any kind of trauma? Or are u jus paranoid because?

And no disrespect but u kinda are putting pressure on his chest in a awkward way, they need support from the tips of their front feet to the base of their tails, shouldn’t really let their front half hang off ur hand.

I did not hear a thing and no that is not a URI. My Zontar had a URI and he was clicking, coughing and had mucous coming out of his mouth/nose.

A URI is very very serious. He needs 3 doses of antibiotics (Fortaz) at the vet. What is the humidity in the tank? It can never ever be above 40 or that causes a URI. Get. A digital humidity gauge and place it next to the basking light on the hot side a few inches below the top of the tank. Other causes for a URI are leaving a water bowl or wet/damp items in his enclosure overnight or getting water in his ears or high water level in his baths. For now NO baths till u get him to the vet and lots of Heat!!! At night never ever leave a water bowl in the tank or food in the tank. Also let him lay downwards like a ramp with his head downwards that helps. Try and call a Breeder or pet store to see about a reptile vet that can get u in sooner.

Hi thank you for the feedback! His humidity is always around 40 or less and he doesn’t have a water bowl! ’m getting some mixed signals now, what signs did you see that he had it? I linked a video above!

Wheezing, gaping heavy breathing. Taking him out in the cold is a big Noo and water in his ears or too high of a water level in his bath can cause aspiration where he indirectly breathes water. Regardless take him into the Vet asap. Also make sure it’s not too hot in the tank. If using a mercury bulb then remove it ASAP; those are deadly and require 16imches away from Beardie minimum & no other lights to be used with it. But Just stay away from those bulbs. Use a zoomed CLEAR bulb for heat and the Reptisun 10.0 T5 long tubular bulb for UVB that’s it and use a digital thermometer & digital hygrometer. Adult Beardies 10mnyhs old and up like the temp at 95-97. When younger they need it a bit higher.

Ok! I definitely have the proper heating and lighting I just have a quick question about the bath, when hes taking a bath it’s always about arm level but I do brush his scales and some of the water occasionally get on his head, could this be a reason. Also the link above shows how he is breathing! Also I’ve seen videos of bearded dragons swimming in pools! I know that’s not safe but will that cause RI?

How often are you giving baths? I would not brush his scales unless hes shedding real bad--- dragons do not need baths on a daily routine--- too many will dry the scales out --- a dragon should only be getting baths if they drink from the bath or have poop all over themselves-- the UVB your using is a T 5 or T 8? There is a difference between those bulbs -- distance and placement is crucial for the bulbs -- and the screen on the tank --- is it a fine mesh or a wide hole type?
