Hello! I am new here! I just got a baby bearded dragon and want to make sure I have everything perfect! Can someone tell me the best affordable UVB light fixture for a baby in a 40 gallon tank? (Yes I'll upgrade when he gets older/bigger) right now there's calcium sand in there but I've been researching and wondering if I should get rid of that and get substrate carpet/flooring instead? And if someone can just help me list everything I should get for him food wise, tank accessories etc. thank you!

Please get rid of the sand-- use some textured NON adhesive shelf liner cut to the size of the tank- easy to clean w/ 50/50 vinegar / water -- babies will eat the sand and it is NOT digestible -- next get a long tube fixture 24" UVB this is a good size for tanks 40-120 gallons - a Zoo Med 24" w/ a Reptisun 10.0 T5 bulb or a 24" Arcadia Pro T 5 w/ a 12 % bulb or a Sunblaster Nano Tech w/ the Reptisun 10.0 T 5 bulb- I have links if you need them-- you want a good large hide - basking decor - resin if you can get them now they are easy to clean and sanitize - Pet Smart has nice decor its spendy but nice - dubiaroaches.com also has nice decor along w/ good size hides - I dont recommend hubba huts too hard to clean - you want 2 digital probe thermometers they are the most accurate for getting surface basking temps- they should be 105-110 till about 6 months of age -95-100 around 6 months- cool side of the tank 80ish - stick ons are ok for ambient temps- you want a digital probe hygrometer probe placed on back center wall 40-50% is optimal nothing under 20% or over 70% - I am posting a website for nutrition http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html ignore the kale info its a good staple feeder - you want a staple insect like dubia roaches - crickets - silk worms and BSFL - the dubias and BSFL I recommend - drop the BSFL 20-25 on top of his salads every morning to lure him to the salad bowl do not dust them but you will need to dust the dubias or crickets ONCE per feeding 5 x per week lightly coated w/ calcium D3 and w/ vitamins w/ beta carotene 2 x per week ONCE per feeding -feed the dubias after hes eaten some of the salad - here is a good bowl to keep the BSFL and roaches in https://www.amazon.com/Reptile-Food-Bowl-Dish-Anti-Escape/dp/B07VRQ369N/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20 you want a X large one
you can find some stuff on dubiaroaches.com like your vitamins and calcium D3 - decor and feeders - for now diet should consist of 20% salads and protein 80% - he should be fed protein 2 - 3 times per day- the most important thing is those surface basking temps and his UVB - the UVB needs to be properly placed for the screen on the tank - if its a fine mesh like a screen door it needs to go inside the tank or unobstructed for a wide hole type it can stay one top but the distance for that UVB will be determined by placement - I can help you there - I tried to answer as many questions if you have more please ask
