Great idea tom I know I would love a reptile specific shop in my area. I am in the VA beach area of Virgina. I can tell you if you wanted a good location my area is it. There are a ton of military here and it is a pretty populated area. I think you should do it and hire me to help you run it LoL.I will say owning a bussiness can be very very stressfull, I have been there and done that. But if you have a good product and a good attitude with the potiential buyers you will make it. Good luck and let me know if there is anything I can help you on with getting it started. If I can help I will.
I'm totally for supporting dreams, and if it's something you feel you just have to do, then do it!
But be super careful; agreeing with crypticdragons...
I recently worked for someone who had just started her business, and it turned in to a mess. But, this is a special case, she was kind of a hot mess herself My mother owned her own business, and even though she's absolutely NUTS she actually did really well... So you can totally do it! Just gotta be super careful with your money, especially in the beginning. Do tons of research as to who your competitors will be, what kind of deals they've got, demand, laws etc... Will you need employees? Are you going to buy or rent a place? Shipping and payment methods? Etc... I think working all of this out over 5 years is a really good plan.
You would be asset to the reptile business world!
Renee brings up a good point though, how are you going to deal with irresponsible people? Some places make you sign contracts and stuff to try and ensure a good life for their animals...
Sorry for the rambling, I personally have never owned a business but known several people who have, it takes a looooooooot of work, and a lot of financial/business smarts.
;Dgood luck with your venture bud ;D. me and the missis are looking into doing the whole reptile shop and breeding thing over here in the uk as there are not many specialized shops here in my area the missis has gone to college again to learn more on herps so wouldnt be till after shes finnished her course and probably a couple of years after that. i am sick of people we know going to these large stores being wrongly advised etc as most of the reptile shops in my area are pet shops that have reptiles in them i wouldnt buy from them and wouldnt want anyone else to buy their ill treated reps and always tell people to go to a good breeder who will give out good advice and are only a phone call away for advice.
sorry to steal your thread but i think its a great idea and wish you all the best with you venture
Tom just a thought it seems like a hand full of specialty shops ever survive in DE anymore. I don't know if its due to us having such a large shopping base already. But hey if you put one here I definitely wouldn't mind ;D. Other then Petco and Petsmart there's nothing like what your proposing in DE. the only other pet stores are Concord pet which sucks and some fish stores that I know of.
Hey Delaware has nice beaches! I am their every weekend in the summer with the surf tags. I never did notice any good pet shops while I was down their. :-\
I personally think the SouthEast lol. Say Georgia/South Carolina area. One of the bigger cities in those states would be a great place for a reptile store.
