This is a very difficult post to write and we hope someone on the forum can give us some advice. We are first time owners of an 8 month old Beardie called Rocky and please believe me when we tell you he is very much loved. On Sunday evening Rocky was on walkabouts in our son's room and unfortunately managed to get himself lodged / trapped in between the radiator and wall which was on at the time. As soon as our son alerted us we pulled the radiator off the wall and got him out. He was almost catatonic and black bearded all over (not moving). We put him straight in a bowl and put him in tepid water. We managed to get hold of a vet on the phone who advised the stress of a visit to the surgery may be too much however, we had done the correct thing by putting him in water and calming him down. There is no sign of burns on him and we took him to the vet the following day who advised that she could not see any fractures and he was not suffering with organ failure as far as she was aware - his vitals were fine but she gave him a painkilling injection. The thing is our poor little man has been really traumatised by this event and he will not move or eat. We have been keeping the room as quiet as possible and the night it happened I kept vigil on him. As he wont eat I am going to make some liquidised food up for him and try to feed him with a syringe. I am concerned he wont move... he just seems to crawl in to a different position but wont stand. I appreciate he is probably still in shock, but do you think we should take him back to the vets? Is there anything we can do to help him? Any advice would be much appreciated as we just want to do all we can help to help him. Thank you so much for reading this.

Oh noo, poor fella. I’m a newbie mum and though my guy is adventurous he hasn’t gotten into that type of situation. I’ll let experts help you out as I don’t want to misinform. I just wanted to let you know we are rooting for you all and crossing fingers Rocky makes a full recovery.

God bless you Barb. My poor son is beside himself as he feels guilty it happened - it was a freak accident and we have learnt a lesson (e.g. we will put a guard around the radiator. We just want to know what else we can do to help Rocky as we love him to bits and will do anything to ensure a recovery. Thank you for your very caring message xx

Hi jules im so sorry this has happened, can you give me some more information about your radiator (I know what it is i just dont know anything about them) how hot is it? How long was he on it (honesty is very important here if you can ask your son again, ashure him hes not in trouble we just really need to know how long he was overheating for) exactly how many days has it been since the incident? You say he crawls but doesn’t stand up? , id be careful feeding him you dont want him to choke , start with just some on the tip of his nose(if he doesn’t take it then very gently pry his mouth and put a small amount in) can we see a picture of him(preferably without you touching him) i know i dont need to tell you worst case scenario but i think you should have the knowledge (and I apologize in advance for my bluntness), beardies can get cold but overheating is detrimental, he may never recover if he was overheating for a long time , it is good hes still able to move , when you go to feed him before you pick him up, pick up the very end of his tail then let it go(does it feel limp) , gently poke his arms and legs to prod him (does he recede his legs/arms) ,make shure your giving him liquids as well , no handling other than what’s necessary right now, its good your leaving the room quiet , give him a couple days before your next vet visit if his state doesn’t change , he can go a couple days without food so don’t stress that, but try and give him water every day if you can, give us a current update on him please, i hope your beardy pulls through :(

Awww, sniffle, you're welcome. Your son shouldn't feel guilty. He had no way of knowing Rocky would get himself into that predicament. Dex has done some pretty hair-raising stunts (like jumping out of his tank 3 feet to the floor and swallowing a plastic bb) and there was nothing I could do but wait and fret til I knew he was fine. How's the little guy doing this morning?

Thankfully skybug jumped in. Along with his recommendations on ensuring he gets liquids maybe continue with lukewarm/cooler baths for very short periods. (Not too cold of course) Don't stress the guy out by continued handling, but if he's in pain from overheating the baths might feel good. I'd maybe try one and see how he reacts. If worse, definitely don't do again, but if he responds positively maybe do another very short one a few hours later?? Don't know if that's the wrong advice, but that's what I'd try for Dex. Did the vet give you any pain medicine to bring home and administer? So hope Rocky recovers.

Poor Rocky! Keep him as stress-free as possible-avoid loud noises, moving him too much, etc. Depending on how hot your radiator was, he might have overheated or been burned (was he checked all over his body for burns, or just on top?) He could have been electrocuted as well, or it could be that the ordeal left him terrified and in shock.

Poor little baby and please don’t feel so guilty accidents happen and all we can do is learn from them so they don’t happen again. So far you have been doing everything right and it is good news that he’s calmed down and isn’t black bearding anymore. At the moment I feel like what’s best is to give him some time to adjust to his tank again and give him a week to hopefully fully distress. Try not to hold him too much or tank him out of his tank unless it’s necessary. Definitely monitor him closely if there are any changes to his behaviour or health I’d contact the vet immediately to inform them and keep them updated as well. For now I’d just monitor his weight even if he doesn’t eat for a week his weight shouldn’t go down too much, just make sure there are no drastic changes to his weight. Until that happens I think it’d be ok to hold off on the syringe feeding just because I’ve heard that medication can make beardies nauseous, so him not eating could be a side affect from the pain killers. HoomanSlave did make a good point that your beardie could have sadly been electrocuted and that could be the reason why he isn’t walking properly at the moment. I again I’d just give him some time but do pop that question to your vet and see what he says and if electrocution could be the reason to why he’s acting this way and maybe the vet could give you some suggestions to help rocky get better. The worst thing to happen is that you have a special needs beardie and there’s nothing wrong with that. I have 3 myself and truly you just learn to love their little imperfections because to me they just make them that much more special. Overall for now just try and spoil him the best you can from inside his tank. For example I have beds for my beardies because I am a crazy lizard lady and it may just be the crazy talking but I always think they sleep a bit better when they are in them so when his lights turn off you can put, let’s say, an old tshirt in his tank and put him on that to sleep on. Maybe use one of your son’s shirts in there to make him feel that he’s helping rocky get better, and so your son doesn’t feel so sad anymore either. All in all you guys are doing a great job with rocky so please don’t feel so bad as to what happened, beardie dare like toddlers and always get into places they shouldn’t, I always tell myself if you can’t here them something is up . I hope rocky gets better soon and keep us updated on how he’s doing, sending all the love and prayers for him ❤️❤️❤️

Also would you mind sending in a picture of Rocky? Sometimes people here can pick up things about beardies that you have missed from experience with them :)

Thank you so much for your very helpful and thorough response; you have no idea how much I appreciate your comments. We are not sure how long Rocky was trapped but no longer than 10 minutes (we think nearer 5 minutes).
The radiator heating system is basically hot water running through and unfortunately it was on at the time. Just talking about it makes me feel unwell... the poor little man :-( He seemed a little more alert today (not sleeping or closing his eyes as much and he did drink a little water through a syringe several times today. We tried feeding but its still a no go (he did take tastes of liquidised greens, sweet potato and calcium). He still isn't moving much but he did stand on all fours for a moment or two today and he also got up on to an ornament in his vivarium. Still not taking anything for granted with him as he looks uncomfortable. How much water would you recommend we give him during the day? Is there anything you can recommend to help with feeding (he wasn't eating much before the incident but vet advised he is a good weight) ? We were told by the vet to look out for burns in the next day or so and they said they had some cream we could put on. He isn't burnt on his belly and stress marks are reducing a little. I lifted his tail as you suggested and it dropped but second time he did hold it for a little while. I can see he is still highly stressed out but he seems to like having my son around him who has kept him company today. I've been taking notice of a lot of posts on this site and we changed all the UVA/UVB lights today. I'm attaching a few photos taken this afternoon by my son and thank you again for all your wonderful advice and support.

Golly, your Dex sounds like Rocky. He also has jumped out of the vivarium recently and landed on my sons gaming chair. He just looked at me as if to say "who needs a parachute". It's terrifying and like you, I fret. Well thankfully Rocky is still with us and we left him alone today in quiet although one of us was close by to keep a watchful eye. He took water again today but still not eating. Stress marks have reduced and he wasn't black bearding as much. I'm hoping we can make gradual progress each day but appreciate you cannot take anything for granted. We love the little man to bits and we are willing him to pull through. In terms of pain relief, the vet gave him an injection on Monday and we are just waiting to see how he progresses. If need be, we will take him to the vets again if he appears to be suffering. He does seem a little more alert today so fingers crossed. Thank you so much for all your help and advice and Dex is lucky to have a lovely owner looking after him xx

Thank you for your reply HoomanSlave and I really appreciate your advice. The radiator was hot but thankfully he was definitely not electrocuted as we would have got a shock when we pulled it off the wall. He was checked out by the vet and there was no visible signs of burns at the time - the incident happened on Sunday and we were told it could be up to a week before anything visual appears and peeling starts to happen and to go back to get some cream should this happen. His vitals were fine and he was not showing signs of organ failure. It must have been a horrifying experience for him and I wish I could turn the clock back - we truly love him to bits and they make a big impact on our hearts. We will do our very best for him and you are all so kind with your help. Thank you.

Please excuse the green around his mouth... we had just tried to feed him some liquidised green and sweet potato! :)

Emilia, I just wanted to thank you so much for all your input and really helpful advice and we will certainly take heed of all you have said. We are trying to give him some space and believe me when I say he is watched constantly but quietly. I never thought I would be a reptile lover at all and I wouldn't even pick him up when we first got him. But everyday he has been with us he has broken down the barriers and I wouldn't swop him for the world. My heart was breaking on Sunday when we saw the state he was in.... honestly it was such an awful moment and couldn't sleep at all that night worrying about him. My son is finding a t-shirt to put in the vivarium with him, but we have been covering him in a little blankie overnight and ensuring he is as comfortable as possible. Nothing wrong with being a crazy lizard lady and I think I will join your club :) Your three Beardies sound like they are spoilt rotten and deservedly so. Thank you again. I wasn't sure how everyone was going to react to the post but you've all been so nice and so helpful. We will never let Rocky out of our sight again for sure. xxx

Aww, he is so handsome, even if he’s not feeling himself! Were his eyes always this colour? They’re really beautiful. I hope he makes a speedy recovery! If you’d like to post any pics of your full enclosure for anyone to chime in with any tips or friendly ‘corrections’ / advice, please do. We’re all here to help and we were all newbies at one point (I still am, I’ve just become a crazy lizard lady and can’t stop reading and researching haha). I don’t let my beardie have much free roaming time because we have radiator pipes all around the floor and they get super hot, I’ve always been scared of what happened to your guy happening! And when the rads are off I worry it’s way too cold in here! x

In regards to the water Q, I can’t personally advise on syringe feeding etc because I’ve never had to do it and haven’t researched it thoroughly but I’ve seen people warn about beardies breaking the plastic or glass syringes so be aware of that. And also, read up about beardies aspirating - you’ve got to ensure you don’t get too much water in their mouths / over hydrate them. As I say I don’t know enough, but go super slow and allow them to swallow / drink before administering more - hope that makes sense and helps a little x

From your post and what you have told me its sounds like hes on the better end of overheating, its really good that he stood up , i had a overheated gecko given to me and its tail was completely limp for a week (not to my fault, someone i know “rehomed” him to me years ago) , i know its not nice to do but did you poke or prod him gently? (Your gauging his reaction time) , how big is the syringe? Its not a turkey baster is it? You can give him one or two depending on if hes actually drinking it (if it falls out of his face ) (staying hydrated is important after a burn) watch for aspiration as jj said, keep up the veg on his snoot, he probably wont want bugs right now that requires alot of energy to move his head , chew etc. is he seeking his basking bulb? If he is you might want to put a paper towel over him so the rays arnt hitting his skin directly , it sounds like hes gonna pull through, im glad you have a good vet who gave him some meds!

We will never let Rocky out of our sight again for sure. xxx
You’re very welcome and I’m glad rocky is slowly getting better and hopefully he’s just in a small state of shock the poor baby. It is good news that he’s slowly starting to eat again and that he’s keeping hydrated. Hopefully he keeps it up and gets back to his old self

Just to give you an update on Rocky. Its been a week since his accident and he's a little fighter. He's still not really eating well but he's taking a little pureed food each day and of course water. He had suffered some scorch marks but the vet has given us some flamazine cream and this has helped no end. Rocky has started to move around a little more and so we are more confident of a full recovery. He's been so brave and my son has been absolutely wonderful with him. Thank you all your advice and support. We cannot thank you enough xx
