I just got a new 40 gallon aquarium, do I need to paint the sides and back so only the front is open or can I just leave it all open?

You can paint, or you can do backgrounds. But masking off the back and sides helps calm your beardie by not being in such a big open space. If you're interested check out this site, I've ordered several backgrounds from them and they look and work great
