Hello. I’m new here. I was browsing and thought I may ask my question here. I’ve had my bearded dragon Sammy for almost 2 months. She is about 4 months old. When we first got her, she was not very active. Took her a few weeks to adjust. After adjusting, she started eating normally and running around her tank. Friday, my heat bulb went out while I was at work. The tank got to 80. I could not get to the store till after work. By evening she had stress marks and was laying flat on her rock. Got her bulb and by later that evening she was back to normal. But had only eaten 2 roaches that day. Saturday she was not active and only ate 2 roaches again. I offered her blueberry as she likes these and had before. She ate 3 tiny pieces as she had before. She also drank water that I offered. An hour later she vomited the blueberry and had diarrhea and looked like she was feeling terrible. I gave her time to settle and bathed her as she had the diarrhea on her. She went to bed as normal. Today she is still not active but not vomiting and had a normal stool but maybe with a little mucous. She’s not laying on her basking rock as usual and did not appear to want food. She moved around a few times throughout the day. I offered a calciworm at noon and she had one. But would not eat more. At 430 I offered roaches and still nothing. But she did eat 3 tiny pieces of collard greens. She’s just not herself and not eating her usual. Is all of this due to her lights being out? Does she need a couple days to get back to normal? I will mention after puttting her new bulb, I also put a new uvb bulb. She previously had one but it was the kind the pet store told us to get. This new one goes the length of her tank. I don’t know if maybe that change upset her? She is also shedding her tail. So maybe that could be a bit of an issue with not eating? I’m so new to this and I’ve read as much as I can but she has me so worried now. Any advice? Thank you!

When they don't digest their meal, they will throw up if the basking spot isn't hot enough. I would also get a fecal done at an exotic vet to rule out any intestinal parasites and intestinal worms. The runs aren't normal for them to have.
Please purchase one of those infrared thermometers to take a reading of her basking spot temperatures. If it's too low, you'll need a new bulb if it doesn't go over 90. Babies need a hotter basking spot to properly digest her food.

I will definitely do that, thank you. Her temp had been on point and she was digesting normally. It’s just when the bulb went out and she had to go about 8 hours without. The temps are back to normal but she’s not back to normal. Maybe just re overlong I hope! Will definitely get parasites ruled out. Thank you

What type of bulb are you using? Get the ZooMed basking bulb and if your tank is 40 gallons use a 100watt, if it’s a 20gallom tank use a 50-75 watt. NO colored bulbs ever in the day or nite; basically never use a colored bulb as it burns their eyes. At night life dark. Temp should be 105-107 for a baby 4months or younger. Buy the ZooMed digital thermometer and black the probe on the basking spot to see the temp and get it right. Also a digital Hygometer Thrive brand is good place it on the hot side 2inches from the top of the tanks. And at 6mnths or older temp can be 100-102 is good. And do u have a UVB light? U need to order from amazon the Reptisun 10.0 T5 to cover 70 percent of the tank. Without UVb the Beardie will get sick and have brittle bones and unable to walk or eat. Also at this age up until 6mnths u need to feed 5times a day; crickets and Dubia roaches only alongside greens and veggies. U feed proteins till they stop eating they need lots of it for their bones and to grow. Only feed staple (Everyday) greens and veggies if u don’t do a mixture now as a baby,?he will never eat them when he’s older. Dandelions, mustard, collard greens, yellow squash, endives, snap peas, butternut squash, & green beans those are the everyday greens & veggies do 2-3 of each in a low Beardie plate diced up so he can eat them place it on the cold side 2 fresh ones a day one in the Mornign and one mid afternoon. Never Ever give spiinach, lettuce or kale stick to the ones I listed. Also, He needs lots & lots of protein and calcium REPCAL brand dusted in his crickets or Dubias or veggies once per day 5days a week. And never ever feed until one hour of basking they need to be warm to eat and last feeding they need lights on for 2 Hours before turning them off so they can digest their food. Another issue is impaction; DONOT ever feed a baby dragon worms, their tummy can’t handle it at this age. Only best worms are super and hornworms and that’s when they are 1.5 yrs of age or older and never do mealworms it’s cheap and horrible for their tummy. Do u have a Sand or Coconut substarte? If so, remove ASAP. They ingest it and can’t pool or move. Use smooth shelf liner from target or wallmart, paper towels or white terry cloths. Or go on ZENHABITATS and call
Then and order the flooring substrate which is a padded matt for only $34 it’s amazing. This will all
He’ll follow the above if still uses the bet ASAP. Here’s a pic of how the cage should look, my uvb covers the entire tans because I recovered mine from MBD; now I orderd a bigger tank so it’s covering 70prcnt only. Place the long uvb starting at the hot side so there’s a partial area left on the cold side where he can get away from the uvb. Also get a basking tree/platform so he has different levels to bask and at this age they love to climb. Here’s thenoocs if both Beardies also they need a log placed in the middle so they can lounge on it to get cool.

Thank you so much for your reply! Very helpful. Currently we have a 20 gallon tank with the zoomed 75 watt bulb. I was told in July when I got her to buy a red bulb, but after 3 days I found out that was wrong and I’ve trashed it. She sleeps in complete dark now.
I was also told to buy the coil for the uvb bulb and after further research I found out about the Reptisun. That took a few weeks to come in due to shopping issues and the first one came completely broken and had to ship back. Could not find in town. I got the Reptisun 10.0 t5. It is ordered to the side of her new enclosure, but I put it on the 20 gallon tank 3 days ago as I worried she was not getting enough. It does cover the whole tank though because it’s not the right fit. Is that ok? We ordered a 120 gallon from zen habitat in July. And we’ve had issues getting that as well. It barely shipped and hopefully here September 11. Then all the lights will fit properly. I do not have the probe. I will get one today to be sure! I have a hygrometer on both sides of the tank. The hot side usually reads 100-102 and the cool side is 80. I will definitely get the probe or heat gun to make sure those are accurate. As far as food. We fed her crickets and mealworms in the beginning. She never ate much in the beginning. I don’t think she likes crickets. And after more research I found the dangers of mealworms. But she did eat those for a couple weeks. Hopefully that did not cause issues. Then I found Dubia roaches and she loves those. That’s when she really started eating. She will usually eat 14 a day. But is that enough? She usually won’t eat till 1230pm but I will see if I can get more feedings in. I was only doing calcium and vitamin 3x a week. I will up that to 5 like you say. I had gotten her calciworms (Black soldier fly) to see if she wanted variety. These are no good at this age either? She finally ate just now. Only 3 dusted roaches, but more than she’s had the last two days. She’s actually finally basking again. She quit for a couple days. Could that be stress related not basking? She will eat her veggies. I give her butternut squash and mustard greens. But she will not eat these out of a dish. A dish seems to upset her in the tank. So I hand feed. I also hand feed her roaches. Am I going about this the wrong way?
Our tank was sand due to recommendation of pet store. After 3 days I found that was wrong as well and we went to tile. I’m seeing a trend on what pet stores told us and we ended up buying everything again but with the right stuff. So I’m glad yo have found this site where you all know your stuff. We bought Sammy not knowing what we got into and let the pet store tell us what great starter pets they are and that they don’t require much. And I’ve researched endlessly since then and put over a thousand dollars into getting her the right stuff. So now I’m just in a panic on when she got sick so I’m sorry this is all over the place. I think I answered everything. Let me know if I missed anything. I sooo appreciate the responses I’ve received. I will post a pic of her in the habitat. She seems better today. She’s more alert and basking. I feel like she’s a bit small for her age? I feel like she’s been under eating since we got her. I added a couple extra pics just for size. The others were fairly recent. I think she seems healthy? Again thank you so much

Pet stores are always trying to make a buck. They will sell you things you don't need. I've had a pet store trying to sell me coils, try to tell me they only need supplements once a week instead of daily. (I dust his greens twice a day and his feeders once a week.) They tried to convince me to use reptibark, reptisand, calcium sand. They also try to sell you a larger tank. (Which is ok if you have the room for it. I had a small space enough for a 40-55 gallon critter keeper. It fits in this corner of my house and he has a view of the TV and a view outside. (Enrichments)

When I bring him into a pet store, the employees are surprised how big he is. They always sell babies and juveniles. They never knew that they could get big! My sweet boy is 19in. Of course, this is a photo of checking out what's on TV.

Oh yea, for sure! And I found that out the hard way too. There were two employees who had a bearded dragon. I talked to one the day we got Sammy and she gave me a bunch of info on how she takes care of hers. I went in the next day and spoke to another lady who gave me the complete opposite info of what the other lady does. She also had me buy a red light. So I did. And after the fact I was like why the different info??! So I researched as I should have done to begin with. And I think they were both wrong. They sold me the calcium sand also. Then I ditched the sand and red lights and coils and all the other bs they told me. So now I will only buy my roaches there. Felt so scammed! Lol. But live and learn right? I was also told that they eat once a day and to dust once a week as well. So glad I did the research myself.

Your dragon is very beautiful and big and healthy! You must be proud! I hope mine will be this healthy. Never thought I could love a lizard or be so worried about one! Any tips on getting her to eat better or what your routine looks like would be so helpful as well.

People research the pamphlets the store offers and are told that's the way to go. Then you have conflicting information on Google about them. That's why health issues happen with beardies. People don't understand that the care is more than what they say on the pamphlets. They don't stay small and easy to care for. Just like anoles or other smaller lizards. They are not beginner pets. It requires a lot of time, effort, patience, and skill. I'm still learning about beardies because each one requires different care. Some require special care when they have defects. I had a beardie named Allie who was sick all the time and when she passed away, I knew she came to me to get love. I fought so hard to keep her healthy and alive. She wasn't strong.

My beardie of 6 years old just finished coccidia and whipworm treatments. His last dose of Panacur was on August 29th. He's doing well.

Maya loves bee pollen. It's what I sprinkle on his greens. He will eat them as long as his bee pollen is on there. I have to purchase more good vegetables for him to eat. He has a granulation tissue in his mouth from his coccidial treatment with Albon. (He bit hard on the syringe. I found the syringe he bit down on and have been treating him. He's feeling so much better and eating on his own. I had to syringe feed him puree foods and baby foods.

That’s exactly what happened. We got a pamphlet. We originally went to get a tank for wild lizards. My 6 year old catches lizards and releases after 2 days. Then we decided winter is coming let’s get him a permanent easy pet. So they told us a bearded dragon. They definitely don’t tell you the work they take and how precise things need to be. But I love her and doing the best we can! I don’t regret her I just want her to grow up healthy. It makes me sad that so many grow up with bone diseases or not having the proper care because a pet store said they are great starter pets.

Have you had your 6 old since he was a baby? Is the coccidia a common thing for bearded dragons? I am glad to hear that he is feeling better. Poor guy that must have been tough on him. And you as well. You sound like a fantastic dragon mama. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Allie. It sounds like you gave her such a great life and made her happy even though she was sick.

I’ve been hearing about bee pollen. Is there a specific one you would recommend? What does that do for them?

A lot of work.

Yes. I didn't have to buy a new tank. Just the fixtures and lights, and new decor.

They have a certain amount of healthy coccidia and pinworms- they both work in the gut. But if something causes them stress or one of the other starts to 'get out of control', they need treatments to bring the number back to normal.

Can be any brand of bee pollen. (Local bee pollen is best) It helps their health and is an appetite boost.

YES the pet stores give horrific and deadly info!! I Reacue and Rehome and have seen horror!! Never ever ever colored lights; I wonder why people don’t use their brain!! Is the sun red or black? At night does anyone; humans, dogs, cats sleep with lights on? NONO & NO. In the winter a ceramic heat emitter which emits heat and no light if the temp drops below 68-70. And Dubia roaches and crickets alongside the staple greens and veggies I listed. Over 1.5 yrs old u can add some super worms or hornworms good protein as well but high in fat

NO Beardie can have Coccidia!! That will kill them; u need a vet for 2 doses of meds and only pinworms is ok but Coccidia is severe like Lice but in the tummy finritute & enclosure!! U need stool sample and burning boiling watwr to clean the cage and burn all furniture everyday to kill it and it’s simple clean up the poop instantly!!!

How in the world did he bite on the syringe he needs a vet and in order to make sure Coccidia is killed u need a final stopl

Also a Beardie needs a minimum of 120 gallon tank as an adult to thrive and grow and be stress free. That means 4feet long, 2feet deep and 2geet high. Order on ZeNhabittats and amazing $34 padded matt substarte super safe and easy to clean

Calcium once per day only; never more than once a day and 4-5 times a week only the other two u can use vitamin powder called Herptivite. And yes never use coiled or colored bulbs ever

PatsyB and I have been PMing each other back and forth. Plus, I have already done all that except his fecal sample. All his stuff has been in boiling water, high heat, sunlight, and blasted with coccidial cleaner off of Bearded dragon co. He is on probiotics since the first day of treatment.

He has normal poops now and is just starting to get back to eating his salads. His last dose of Panacur was August 28th.

His supplement schedule

Monday: Calcium, Benebac, Electrolyte Water
Tuesday: Calcium with D3
Wednesday: Herptivite
Thursday: Calcium
Friday: Calcium with D3. BeneBac, Electrolyte Water
Saturday: Dusted Feeders with Herpitivite/Calcium
Sunday: Off.
Monday: Calcium, Benebac, Electrolyte Water.
He also spends 'time outside' in the full sun as well for enrichment therapy and fresh air. I've owned him since he was a baby beardie. He's six years old and the vet has said he is very healthy compared to other reptiles he's seen.

I have handled Coccidia in the past thank you.

You're confusing me with someone else. I haven't had a colored light in 10 years I have owned beardies. You have the wrong person here.

Oh, bleach doesn't do anything for coccidia disinfection.
