Heyo! I'm just in the market, planning to get a beardie in 1-2 months, so I'm reading up on everything I need. I see everything about basking/ambient temperatures and they all make sense except this article, which if I understand correctly, says to set the ambient probe on the cool side and then dim the basking light to reach the desired temperature. That's fine, but then how do you maintain the basking temperature? I intend to set the light atop the enclosure's screen, so lowering it won't be an option. TBH, my thought is to set the basking temp and call it all good.

You want 4 temps in the tank -- ambient hot side around 100 surface basking temps under 6 months 105-110 over 6 months 95-100 middle of the tank 90's cool side 80 ish

I've seen that, and it doesn't answer my question. Do you achieve all that just by dimming the basking lamp?

I don't use dimmers so I don't know- you would need to see what the temps are when turning the dimmer down etc--

I Dont use dimmers either. I run a 150 watt basking lamp on top of the screen, my uvb reptisun 10.0 high output is under the screen secured with heat resistant 24" zip ties, and my basking piece is the toad ranch bask n hide. It is exactly 13" from the center of the uvb tube and he loves it! I got the double wide..it fits the whole dragon and he can move around and readjust where he wants to be. He even hides in the hide when he wants to lol. Pics of my setup:
My basking spot is 100.0 with probe., warm side 86 to 91, cool side 73-75.
