I was reading threw the forum and I got to thinking about my windows; I have 2-downstairs, and an awful draft comes from both of them. There is no other place to put 'Cayanne'. Upstairs has a deck door and I would never be able to carry her and tank up. I have the ceramic heat omitter and i'm just wondering what to do to protect her from a draft. Any help please?? river-7

How drafty are the windows? We have both ours in a window and there is an air vent just to the left of them on the floor and we don't seem to have any issues.

They are bad Patsy B; I can feel the draft on the other side of the room. I was just thinking maybe I can block them off with a piece of wood or something as I read that a draft is not good for them. Last year I had a parolet die from the draft and I blocked it off and wrapped him in blankets but he still died on me. Lovely little bird -I know it's different but still all get the same draft. river-7 thanks for that bit of info.

I think it may be a little different with the beardies because they are in a glass tank so it blocks a bit of the draft from them. Here in the states we have this window putty stuff, it looks like a rope and it's like modeling clay that you put between your window and the window frame and it blocks the draft from coming in. You can't open your window when you put it on but the draft would be blocked.

Yeah, Patsy; we have what you call a weather stripping and it goe's around the window, but believe it or not it is still drafty even with that on and that is used to prevent drafts. Maybe I am worried for nothing but just thinking ahead to protect her as she is a sweet-heart.Growing at a speed that is uncanny.I also bought her a heat omitter ceramic thingy that gives heat but no light, as the temps really drop here.Last winter was wicked as it was really cold. So I am just trying to see my options before the cold sets in. Thanks Patsy; much appreciated. Poor little 'Cayanne in another shed-it seems like I turn around and she's shedding again and she eats great shed or no shed. The minute she see's her cricket cup she jumps up on the tank and hangs there until I get it in then she goe's in the cup and eats. river-7

A CHE is great to have. We had a rough winter last year and there were a few nights that Dexters tank got below 65 degrees (Luci's didn't though) my boyfriend just took her out of the tank and wrapped her in a blanket and put her on a cat bed and let her sleep in the living room since we keep the house pretty warm. Then he woke up when her lights turned on and put her back. I think she really liked being spoiled.

Luci is just over 1 1/2 years old and for awhile he didn't shed and now for the last 2 months he's been in constant shed, he's been so miserable.

I would be concerned too! That is not right that it gets so cold at night. We have laws here that if the landlord pays for heat, they need to keep it at a certain temperature. We pay our own utilities in our apartment so we are in control of everything.

I bought her her omitter thingy and I am getting a head start on winter and I think I will carboard her back of the tank and sides and then put a blanket around her tank also and then maybe she will be ok for the cold weather. But I live in Brampton Ontario and man it's colder here then up north the wind just blows threw you.But I do have a couple of months yet to prepare for winter so I am starting early. As prices for lights ect; all go up come winter so if I start now it's not so hard to deal with when the cold gets here. And I will flash freeze her fav; veggs for winter so she don't have to do with-out her favs; during winter time. I hate that as they like= in her case dandelion greens and in winter if you can get them they are wilted and all yucky. So if I flash freeze some for her at least they will be fresh.river-7

We have laws to Patsy; but not all respond to them and what can we do?? But cause a lot of trouble with the landlord tenant act and that is a pain to deal with.river-7

Insulating her tank when it gets cold out is a good idea. You could even put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and put it near her in her tank at night to keep her warm. The CHE should do the trick though.

Last winter the landlord had to come to get me out of the door as the snow was 1/2 way up the door, and he really don't shovel much just a little walk-way to my car which is right in front of my door. And the plows seem to miss us and the snow is piled right up the height of the cars. You have to go out at least 3-4-times to clean off your car or it's packed right up.and as it freeze's it gets really hard to get off. He was suppose to shovel drive-way and that was the agreement when I moved in as I have a disability and he was suppose to take garbage out and shovel and he did for a few times then stopped. So they all seem the same collect the rent and don't honour any agreements they make. river-7

There is a thick plastic sheeting you can buy, thats not very expensive at all. You just put it in the window and staple it all the way around. You can then tape the edges to give it a seal. That will stop the draft but still let the light through, which is a good thing, and you can still see out. Its pretty simple to install and you can then have it in for the cold time of year but take it out when it is warm.
