When I Pickup Gizmo, He Tries to back Himself off My Hand

Hey, all,

After yielding no answer, having searched the limitless depths of Google, I find myself posting here for the first time in order to attain an answer. My wee beardie's name is Gizmo, and he's about a month and a half old. His health is phenomenal, and he's very active (as most young beardies are). I've tamed him well, and he loves to be pet. However, often times when I am lifting him out of his cage, he will back up off my hand until his ass and tail are well in the air. Here, he's through his going in reverse:

Here, you'll see, he's fully reversed:

His and my relationship is surprisingly strong, so I'm confused as to why he's apparently hesitant to rest on my hand normally. I never approach him too quickly, and my movements are very deliberate. My hands are, usually, warm, and he doesn't hiss or enlarge/blacken his beard as my hand moves slowly under his teeny body (look at how fuckin' cute he is ^.^ He will also not respond to the names "Gizbit" and "Garbanzo Beardy"). If anyone can provide some explanation for his behaviour as well as solutions? I really appreciate it!

First, I'm not going to be able to answer your question.... just wanted to share similar behavior from my beardie.

Tigger doesn't backpedal when I pull him out of his enclosure, he does it when it's time to go back in it. As I hold him in my hand, once I get within about 5 feet of his enclosure he'll start backing up to put distance between himself and the tank (at least, that's my assumption). It's really strange, and he doesn't get black beard or anything... just doesn't want to give up his freedom without a fight.

hey there - sometimes ya just never know. they will do the darndest things ! maybe he likes hanging. when I let my girl out to run around (run around is figurative - she's just never in a hurry to go anywhere or do anything) when she is done she will find her way across the living room to a wicker lamp and climb up the base - she'll stay there for hours.

Huh, that is really curious. Gizmo has done similar things. I've always been paranoid that he isn't comfortable (not because he displays any signs of stress or discomfort, but bc, naturally, he cannot speak to tell me whether it's all good). Furthermore, I have a very small, clean room, and bc of some medical stuff, I keep my room very warm. I moved a log in his cage to allow him to climb out whenever he wants, and I put a ramp as his way back in. For about a week, he didn't do anything. However, as I continually showed him the outside of his cage before placing him on the top of the log, he began to ckeck out my room and his boundaries. First time he ran up the log, he got to the top and stared at me for about 10 minutes before retreating (I figure he was just trying to see what I would do if he got to the top of the log. Now, about a week later, he is flying in and out of his cage as he pleases, and it's the cutest thing ever. Also, living in the woods, my house has an ant problem; however, my room does not XD Whenever Gizmo sees an ant, he goes shooting out of his cage for the free food (I keep him plenty fed, believe me, but adolescents are always hungry. Pardon the novel, I just get super hyped about him. I appreciate the reply!

I've heard of beardies being pretty chill in certain situations. Perhaps your room has a slight chill, which causes dormancy in beardies, I've observed. Perhaps his running to the wicker lamp is an attempt to warm up a bit in the room? Perhaps not. I may be talking entirely out of my ass, haha. I'm just curious, haha. Thank you for the reply, btw!

Ive seen a lot of beardies including mine sit on a rock, branch, hammock, etc., exactly like he's sitting on your hand. I honestly just think its a comfortable position for him. I wouldn't worry about it. As a matter of fact, it seems like he trusts you not to drop him the way he's so comfortable kinda just hanging there. Thats my two cents.

Mine tend to back up off my hand if I don't fully support their whole body with both of my hands. Once the back legs and tail are secure then they usually feel safe.

Like Patsy mine will also back up so looks like a beardie thing..
A note of caution with your little one and anyone else reading this..Be careful about allowing your dragon's to eat bugs/ants that come from outside as they could have come into contact/eaten poisons, and they can contain parasites infecting your scaly friend, and certainly not last the bug itself can be poisonous even deathly so.
