The T8 bulbs should be replaced every 6months. The T5's can be good for up to 1 year.
When I had the T8 bulbs sitting on top of the tank, I had to replace them every 5 months because I noticed my beardies would get lethargic around that point. Once I changed the bulb they perked up again.
Nope it depends on the bulb and the placement of the bulb. The mesh top of a tank blocks out a lot of the UVB rays. A T8 bulb which is the fatter tube is only good for 6 months on top of the tank, you may get a little longer with it inside the tank but. If you mount your light inside the tank you want to make sure that it is over the beardies head so that it's not shinning in it's eyes. The T5 tube is skinnier and more powerful and so you can get a good year out of them. The only way to know for sure if they need to be replaced is to buy a SolarMeter. You can get one for just under $200 if you comparison shop. If you have multiple tanks that need lights, it's a great investment. I bought one because I have 3 beardies and a chameleon. I don't want to be changing bulbs all the time if I don't need to.
my viv has the coil uvb bulbs two one each end it has a mesh top and a exo terra light hood thing came with it. should I replace the coils with a uvb tube and can I lay on top of the mesh and still use the light hood as a reflector
If you are going to set your UVB light on top of the tank I would really suggest a Reptisun 10.0 T5 bulb with the proper fixture. The fixture is reflective and the light penetrates the mesh top way better than the T8 size bulb.
I know Pet Mountain was having a sale on lighting, you might want to try them.
