Hey all, so my bearded dragon is almost a year old and I've been using this T8 10.0 18 inch uvb bulb this whole time. Just swapped it over to a 12 inch T5 10.0 bulb. So far it seems to be a step up from what I've been using.. even though it's smaller but I'm told T5 is way better especially since it sits above a 40 gallon cage shining through the screen. Any thoughts on that? Thanks!

Yes I would of gone w/ a 24" fixture-- is your screen a wide hole type or a fine mesh like a screen door? If it is the fine mesh it needs to go inside the tank- distance needs to be 12-15 inches directly above the basking decor- if it's a wide hole type 8-10 inches directly above the basking decor

It's more of a fine mesh. I've been told that fine mesh actually blocks out less of the uvb compared to the wide hole screens. But it's only about 10 inches from basking spot. Plus my dragon goes outside in the desert sun in the backyard almost everyday for a couple hours.

No they have the screens backwards- the wide holed can be used on top w/ a distance of 8-10 inches-- the fine mesh will block 30% of the rays-- it's great your getting him / her out for good rays-- but I would get it moved into the tank w/ a distance of 12-15 inches directly above the basking decor
