Do beardies absorb water thru their vents? I have read that they do. I am on a beardie Facebook page, which I am leaving because some of them are downright nasty towards other people and everyone thinks they are an expert, constantly criticize people who may just be confused about something like lighting or what greens are okay or what substrate to use. Certain things that I believe many newbies especially, (like me) are unsure of and just want some advice from others that have owned lizards before. They want to hear their experiences and what may or may not have worked for them.
Anyway, someone on that page said they do not absorb water thru their vents, it is a fallacy. Are they right or wrong? Am I misinformed?

Sorry about the rant but people just tick me off sometimes, especially when they are jerks to others for no reason.

Hey Jager – yeah it is sad that some people just have to be angry all the time – I feel badly for them. Regarding your question – no – they do not absorb water through their vents. They get water from vegetables and greens and from drinking it.most bearded will not drink from standing water – you may have to swirl it around with your finger or use
an eyedropper and drop it on the tips of their nose and they will lick it off. That may take some training – but both of mine do it readily now. My female will even lick her lips when she wants water!

We might be on the same FB page LOL!

It was always believed that they absorbed water through their vent but that apparently is not true. Things come out the vent but nothing goes in. So the only way they can get water is through their mouths. Greens have water in them, juicy bugs, and plain old fashioned water. I like to drip water on the tip of their nose and coax them to lick it off. It takes a few minutes but eventually they start licking and wanting more.

I just found this http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/lizards/1031252-absoption-water-through-cloaca-vent.html

Dexter does that too! She will lick her lips and look at me, that's the signal to get the dropper out and give her water!

Thank you, that's good to know. Until I read that I thought they did. I drop water on my guys nose and he has yet to lick it or drink water. He has been eating more of his greens lately so that is a positive :)

PatsyB, if it is bearded dragon lovers FB page then yep, we are! LOL

You could always spray his greens with a bit of water just to give him a bit more hydration. My boy doesn't understand the whole licking water off his nose. I don't think he sees the drop when it's happening, sometimes I think he is a bit cross eyed.

I'm on a different FB page. I'm learning that social media is so much drama. There's so many people on FB pages and it's kinda cliquey. I like this forum, we may not be "experts" but we all learn from experience and everyone is willing to share that experience.

I'm not to sure mine knows what to do with the water dripping on his nose either. I will continue to try it and see what happens, he is still quite young so maybe it may take a bit, I'm not sure. I will also spray his greens, thanks for the tip :)

I agree about social media. Everyone here seems to be willing to help one another and give advice in a kind direct manner and are more than willing to share their experiences, success's and failures. I think that's great!

Its funny, I thought when forums started going to FB that it would make them more civil, as then it was less anonymous. It seems like the opposite is true. Most of them on FB are really unbelievably harsh. That particular group, if its the same one Im thinking, banned me for suggesting using bioactive substrate as an option. Oh well, I didnt lose any sleep over it. ;)

Jager, you can also try to use a mister/spray bottle and gently mist them in the face until water droplets start to form. The way their faces are shaped, the water droplets will start to run down into their mouths. This often will get them licking their lips, and so gaining some hydration that way. Ive been told by others that if they did this while the dragon was in the bathtub, their dragons actually started drinking from the water. I never had that experience myself, just relaying what some other keepers have told me. Either way, yep it all has to come in through the mouth.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try misting in the bathtub. Bathed him yesterday and when I wanted to remove him he climbed right back out of his towel and headed straight back for the bath. First time he actually wanted to stay in the tub. So I just draped his towel over the side and when he wanted out he climbed up LOL

Its unfortunate that people have to be that way. I stopped reading comments and am leaving the page. Maybe, if it is the same page, I should suggest the same substrate and get booted [emoji12]

I like my fountain. It's basically just a pump that circulates water and they get to see moving water, I'm going to bfe getting more for the rest. Git one as a trail run.

I've seen instances of them being trained to use one of those water bottles that you put in hamster cages. They push their nose against it and the water drips out onto their nose and they drink it.
