how old is your kid? if he's a young'n (like less than 6 months) you don't want to get something too big cuz he'll feel overwhelmed; Looking at tank measurements is probably a better indicator that just looking at capacity. For example : you can have a tank which is 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 3 feet high. that's 24 cubic feet. OR - you can have a tank that is 2 feet long, 2 feet wide and 6 feet tall. that is also 24 cubic feet. The more ground area, the better. And a couple of feet high (to let him climb and mount lighting) anyway. don't know what a 40 gallon breeder tank is. sorry

I would go with the 40g breeder... I started my female in a 55 gal and albiet I liked how I could regulate the zones well, I really like the 40's better. More room for them to move around and turn around more so. Males will get to be a bit bigger than the females and there is no way my male could go into a 55... If you get a tank that is on the big side and they seem nervous you can always add more hides and places to explore and as he gets bigger just start removing items. and cover 3 sides..

since you have a 40 gal, would you say you NEED a lid for it? or would he try to jump out

That is beardie specific :) my female during the day I leave her top off as she likes to peek her head out the top, but she has zero interest on getting out.. My male on the otherhand he has a lid as he would be out and about getting into trouble..

If your tank is only 17" high, I would def get a lid for it. Figure an adult dragon can be upwards from 18", your dragon could easily climb out of that tank. Plus, you don't realize it but they can jump pretty good!
