I got a small 10 gallon tank off of craigslist the other day (plans for this thing lol) but it use to be a 'fish' tank and it's been sitting in the woman's garage for a very long time. Has a very textured coating of something on it (I'm not a fish person here lol)
What would be the best way to clean this? I could scrape off some of the crap on this tank with a fingernail.

I'd use a razor blade to get the stuff off. Then scrub it with soapy water, with a splash of bleach if you have any.

razor blade is definitely going to be needed for this stuff. I'm going to grab a large container of vinegar and soak it first with that and water to see if I can get most of it off. Then go over it with a razor blade. I figured out that white stuff must be hard water or calcium. I'm going to mess with it this weekend. For right now, it's on my deck lol.

Hey, if it's calcium, CLR would work great. A thorough wash afterwards and it would be good as new!

If it's sticky you could try Dawn dish soap and a razor blade or some GooGone. Make sure you rinse real good to get all the soap off. Sterilize the tank afterwards with either a steam cleaner or some plain ammonia (1part ammonia to 10 parts water) to kill any lingering bacteria that was left behind from the fish. Again if you use ammonia, make sure you rinse real good afterwards.
