Ok this is going to be diffrent than my usual post but I just pulled up at my bearded dragon vet and I’m ready to go inside, but they stop me and say you can’t enter the building becuase of COVID. I was still confused but they proceeded to grab ( and I mean grab) my bearded dragon and took him inside. They made me fill out a form asking for the concerns of today’s appointment, and that was all they neeeded. I’m confused, is this normal for vets to do or should I be giving them more info, the whole thing seems a bit sketchy so I’m hoping for some feedback! I would also like to point that I have nothing against the people, I’m sure they are hard workers but I’m always hesitant with exotic reptile vets.

I dont really dont want to throw my opinion into the ring cause it might show my ignorance, but since u asked lol,… first off yes that’s normal for covid (and obviously they dont get many lizards by how they treated urs) , BUT they should of prepared you more, why were u there? General check up I assume? Usually ur supposed to bring a stool sample, and ill be honest, all a exotic vet can do for a lizard is , check for parasites(either by stool or blood) take an xray to see whatever they’re looking for (blockage, somethings broken, or mbd) they can prescribe medication, and lastly they can do minor surgery and when i say minor i mean all they can do is amputation (I wouldn’t trust anyone to operate on something that small,… especially a LIZARD) please keep on mind i was raised on a farm so we deal very differently with “sick” animals, most of exotic vets are a straight up scam (my reasoning? They’re all going off of a book… or the internet , which is outdated) (additionally lets say u found a “bearded dragon expert” the doctor only works on bearded dragons, k? But his knowledge is only based on CB bearded dragons, not wild ones or the species as a whole) for smaller exotics id say dont bother even going in unless u need care for any of the things I listed above, dont get me wrong i have respect for the real vets, but i live in FL and theres a lot of bogus vets out here as it is…. Rant over ,….. bottom line, if ur bearded dragons sick look up the symptoms as best as u can, if u cant find good information or have the means to take care of them yourself, take ur pet to the vet…..

Thank you so much for this answer! your right they definitely need specifics or they don’t seem to know what there talking about. I did bring in a stool sample and test for URI and both were negative, I’m glad he’s ok but my main concern was his size and they couldn’t seem to answer that.

Thats good u came prepared, in my experience with taking care of reptiles they’re alot like birds and small rodents, if they get sick, they really have to want live and with proper husbandry and care to get better, what are your concerns with his size?
