Switching from crickets

I’m going to be switching my beardie from crickets to black soldier fly larvae, wax worm, horn worm. Just curious how many of each I should be feeding? He’s about 1 year old.

Also do these need to be gut loaded like crickets do? If so how would I accomplish that if I store them in the fridge?

BSFL eat what they come in -- make sure you feed them when they are moving- Have you thought about dubia roaches for a feeder- wax worms are very fatty and I would feed them sparingly they have been known to cause liver issues - supers or meal worms would be a better option along w/ the horn worms - and butter worms - they are spendy but can be found at joshsfrogs.com -- the BSFL will require quite a bit since they are so small - and the amount I am not sure but we can ask some others as far as amount -

The roaches are a hard no for me atm. The bsfl, feed them to my beardie when they’re moving? The wax worms are because he’s half the weight he should be, trying to fatten him up;). I am also giving meal worms but I was worried about compaction. I thought the butter worms were higher in fat than wax worms? I found if I feed him super worms he won’t eat anything else. I actually just broke a week and a half food strike using the wax worms because of the supers. He was refusing everything except the super worms.

You want to go slow and steady w / the food - is he eating salads? Yes super worms will do that to a dragon - wax worms are ok just dont feed as often - you want the BSFL moving keeping them in a fridge will make them go to sleep also if they turn into the flies feed them dragons like the flies -- how many meal worms were you feeding and how old is he?

He was eating crickets, but I think I’m over the maintenance, and you told me they aren’t very great nutrition wise. I’m thinking for his new feeding regiment 3 meal worm 2 wax worms and 4 BSFL a day, maybe twice a day if you think that would be a good idea. No he isn’t eating his salads regularly, occasionally yes but not consistently. I’ve tried everything to get him eating more salad (Squash, I’ve tried using Repashy’s grub pie as a gravy on top, I change up the base of the salad regularly) and with him being underweight I don’t wanna withhold bugs until I get his weight up. I’ll have had him for a year on November 1st and they sold him as a four month old so about 13-14 months. His weight was around 250g before his food strike, the vet told me he should be up around 510g.

I’ve been giving him the wax worms and meal worms for about two days now and I’m already noticing a difference in his energy levels. Just got the BSFL and hornworms in the mail today.

He needs way more BSFL for a adult dragon --- I am guessing around 100 of them at one feeding but I want to get a response from someone else --Tracie can also answer this question about the amount of them

Hello,

Since he is a year or so old, he should be eating more greens/vegetation right now. The phoenix worms/
BSFL are small but nutritious. Are you feeding any other insect along with those weekly?
I normally recommend no more than 50 or insects weekly for adults. Since they are small, you could get
by with a few more than that if that is the only insect you are feeding.
You are no longer feeding crickets right now?

Last few days I’ve been doing 4 meal worms, 2-3 wax worms, and 5-6 BSFL twice a day, I’ve just started using these. Also he’s underweight and just went through a week and a half food strike, so I’m trying to get his weight up. I know he should be eating more greens but he turns his nose at the salads, I’ve tried everything to get him to eat aside from withholding insects altogether. Which I won’t do until he’s of a healthier weight. He’s decided he’ll no longer eat the crickets, that’s why I’ve had to switch.

Thank you for your reply and help!

Ok they are a very good feeder and a lot less hassle than crickets- easier to keep and last longer- I thought the same at first but after feeding them I have never gone back to crickets- they are also cheaper

Hello,

It sounds like you are doing a great job trying to get his weight up. It does make it hard when they become picky! The calcium worms are fine, since he is also eating meal worms & some
wax worms, as well as trying to get him to eat some greens.
Try putting some bell pepper pieces or minced up squash for some color to see if that helps to entice his appetite of his greens.

Thank you he’s had a bit of a ruff start and he’s a really affectionate beardie, I just wanna see him thrive! I’ve tried it all withy the greens I’ve done the squash, bell peppers, I’ve tried using repashys grub pie as like a gravy on top.

Hers is a website for nutrition ignore the kale info its outdated and a great staple

take the worms and put them on top of his salads first thing in the morning - use them as lures to the bowl - the BSFL and silk worms are really good - silk worms stick to everything
