Hi! I recently in the care of a little dragon that came to me from a child, well meaning and loving, but inexperienced owner. I’ve had dragons in the past and took this little guy because the family couldn’t afford the proper care for him. So a care history run down: S/he is roughly 4 months of age (could be older). S/he came from petSmart and for the past 3 months has had 7ish crickets/day, occasional lettuce/bagged salad mix, no supplements, no hydration soaks, spot basking light only and no UBV at all. S/He was in a 10g aquarium that couldn’t support a heat gradient. I have since moved it to a 40g with ReptiSun 10.0 in a T5-HO fixture, heat Gradient of 104 basking to 73 cool side. Vitamin D/Calcium rotation with plain calcium and a Multi Vit on Sundays.
So here’s my concern, s/he seems small for its age. I’ve also been soaking him every other day for hydration. S/He also has a malformed leg, as you can see in its picture. According to its previous caregiver, s/he came that way. S/He’s not the best hunter. If s/he doesn’t catch it when it lands directly in front of him, s/he doesn’t eat it. S/He’s got a very small appetite and will only eat 3-6 crickets at a time, at most. I cant get it to eat more than 10/day. I’ve been tong feeding it to build and monitor his intake. He will not eat greens. Licks them, won’t eat them.
S/He’s barely 6” from the top snoot to the Tip of its tail. I remember my dragons being much larger at that age. Could s/he be stunted? Will it cat up or Is it possible s/he may stay a smaller sized dragon?

I got him last Monday.

The UVB is on top, as the 40g I have him in isn’t that tall and I have a T5HO fixture and bulb. He also have climbing areas last that keep him elevated, most of the time. I think the lights are mildly confusing to him, he keeps looking up at them like WTF?
Despite the move, I’m hoping his life has gotten a little less stressful. He was previously in a busy living room with 2 dogs and 3 cats laying around his tank and staring at him. I now have him set up in a dedicated Invert/Reptile room, with no cat/small child access.

I keep crickets because I have a large Tarantula collection and most of them don’t recognize Dubia roaches because they tend to “play dead”. We have the same issue with our chameleon. I will likely keep going with crickets. I can disable the crickets, that’s not a problem. I was also considering doing a small “feed bin” to see if a limited space would work.

I have the list you linked and have been feeding dandelion, mustard and collard greens with yellow squash.

Add on: He poops once, sometimes twice a day. His bath is a guaranteed poop. The first few in my care had solid pop, with visible undigested bug bits and darker beginnings and a very chalky/dry appearance to the urates. They are now solid, with no visible crickets parts and white softer looking urate.
