I can't sleep so I'm trolling youtube. I just watched a video of a dragon eating live minnows out of a shallow dish of water.

Has anyone else tried this? Is it good for our four legged children?

NO NO NO! I've seen a video like that and I've seen people on FB that post about feeding minnows. Minnows are bad, not only because of the little bones but because they carry unknown parasites. Not a good idea to feed them to your beardie. There are way more appropriate foods to feed them.

People like to do things for the wow factor and don't take into consideration the danger it poses to their beardie.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never do it for many obvious reasons.

There were also videos showing dragons eating giant spiders, other lizards, pinkies, large grasshoppers and other various critters.

I'll stick to the routine crickets, dubia roaches, phoenix worms and such.

I do have a question, though. Is it OK to feed purged earthworms?

Yes you can feed earthworms just be VERY clear that they have not been contaminated by pesticides/fertilizers

Should be fine. Just make sure you rinse them off and dry them real good. Mine always had a hard time picking them up because they are slimy.

In the wild a beardy will eat whatever it can catch and swallow. In captivity is best not to take unnecessary risks. It's neat to watch them eat, but impaction is always out there as a risk.

Nothing problematic about feeding hissing cockroaches, no. The adults are probably a bit too big for some dragons (some of my adults were close to 5 inches long), but still good nutrition for them if they can get them in. The hissing does really freak some lizards out the first time they experience it. Had one of my monitors drop it completely the first time. Shouldve seen the look on her face ;)

As for the earthworms, they are great nutrition. I tend to only feed the ones listed as nightcrawlers (Lumbricus terrestris or Eisenia hortensis usually). There are the ones called just red wigglers or earthworms (Eisenia fetida), and they often produce a bitter unpalatable slime when disturbed. Im guessing thats what you are thinking of Patsy. Its a pretty good defense mechanism as many lizards will not eat them as a result. However, the nightcrawlers wont do that, and are fantastic nutrition. No need to purge them though, laswabbie, part of that nutrition comes from the soil they consume. It provides great levels of minerals and nutrients that few other invertebrates can.

My big girl (Elmo) has laid eggs occasionally so to make sure she gets all the calcium she needs I'll give her a pinkie. She'll get pretty lethargic after she has eggs and the calcium powder doesn't seem to cut it for her. But one pinkie and she perks right up

Yes, I would have liked to see the reaction to a hisser!

I would think that a full grown wild beardie would scoff down a whole nest of pinkies if he found one. It's something to consider in a year or so when Falkor gets some bulk built up.

They are good for helping gals restore and replenish what making eggs takes from them.. They can be fed but only occas to rarely as they have lots of fat too. And of course a great way to boost the calcium that was lost to egg production.

At what age would you feed a beardie a pinky? My baby is 13 weeks old.

I would only feed them for gravid females after egg laying..it can be fed as a treat every once and awhile to a healthy adult as its alot to digest and process. Its one of those food items that is not a you have to feed them.

Okay, thank you! I don't want to feed a pinky! The thought of that creeps me out! No thank you!! I'll stick to the dubia's!
