i bought mines from petsmart for $30 i got a female and i will be looking to get another female and then another male from separate bloodlines. i want to house them together for breeding purposes because i want them to be my first breeder project. i love beardies but a desert lizard like this would make an awesome begineer lizard. they can be handled very well and only get 6". They would make a great beginner pet for ages 9-13 so that if parents went out and bought their kid their first reptile they wouldn't have to get something as large a beardie but small like a gecko that is active during the day and still great to handle
Very cool! I've seen them at our favorite little petshop here for several months but the info on them is really scarce. I've read that it is because they are relatively new to the pet market.
If you have a link to some more in depth info on them and their requirements I would love to take a look at it and look forward to the pics of you new lil gal
i keep mine in a 55 gal tank with 4 inches of washed playsand. with a basking spot of 100-105. degrees on the basking spot and 75-85 on the cool side. i have 3 hides because these little guys utilize them very well. i have a 1:2 ratio 1 male and 2 females. im going to make tunnels for them to utilize these little guys also love to dig. they at like little monitors. unlike beardies they have that forked tongue they use to smell the air and i use 2 small water bowls on each side of the tank. i feed them mini mealworms and dubia roaches im going to try the reptiworms. They are very curious little guys. I can't wait to see if they give me eggs. This will be my first breeding project im still doing reasearch on them.
i just wanted to let everybody know that mercury is doing fine. steppes are able to loose their tail and regrow it back. i have noticed that when she is out and i stick my hand in the cage near her she will shake her tail, im guessing this is a defense mechanism so when they are in the wild a predator will go for the tail and that allows them to get away safely. i had about 2 inches of playsand and had to add another 2 making it four inches because these little guys love to dig. for basking i recommend not using anything they have to climb high up on because they will not use it i have use an array of rocks and articial cacti about 4inches tall. and have built underground tunnels out of pvc pipe. i will try to get a picture of her.
These are my two females that i received from reptmart this mourning. Already these ladies are alert climbing and making tunnels. I will post pictures of my boys later. They have big personalities for such little lizards. I do recommend these verses geckos if you are looking for a reptile that stays little and you get to see them during the day.
These are my boys.
Mercury, he is recovering from tail loss. I bought him at a pet store apparently they weren't being to nice to their lizards and got closed down a week later.
.
Zeus Is in his little hide. The only time he like to come out is for a quick bask and when I'm bringing his food.
Thanks for the pics! Those guys are really great looking lizards! We have seen them many times at the pet shop near home and have started many times to pick them up and bring them home...lol..as if we need more mouths to feed..lol! My big hold back has been the relative lack of info on them that is available but am starting to see more in depth info trickling in on the Net so may have to go ahead here soon and give them a whirl after all
Thanks again! Always enjoy pics and updates!
They remind me of a little monitor lizard and make great display lizard. if you think beardies have personality you got to see these guys they are just as funny but in a little package
