Hi,

we just found out that our beardie taco is a female. This is our first reptile and we’re not sure what to expect when she starts to lay eggs. Is it complicated? Time consuming? The vet said that spaying her is an option which we are considering. Has anyone here spayed their female? Is it safe? Recommended or not?

It is NOT recommended to spay a female unless she is having lots of issues w/ egg laying -- if proper care and lighting w/ good UVB and basking temps are provided she should not have a issue -- a good reptile vet should do the procedure IF it needs to be done -- I do not recommend it --- how old is Taco and has she laid eggs before

Spaying can be extremely risky. If she has never mated, the eggs will not be fertilized and you won't have to worry about raising them. However, if she starts having issues (i.e egg binding) it may be something you have to do

No need to spay her unless she is having issues. Some female beardies rarely lay eggs while some will lay many clutches per year it all depends on your beardie. There is some extra care that comes with it but nothing too complicated. Usually a female beardie will get wider in the belly when she’s caring eggs, she will also eat less and often will lay eggs after brumating but not always. All the extra care that is needed is giving her extra calcium supplements so she doesn’t get calcium deficiency and if she is doing digging motions around her tank provide her with a dig box she she can lay the eggs. After she lays her eggs again just supply her with extra calcium supplements, lots of water and a bit of extra protein to get her energy back up. But besides that no different than providing a male beardie a hump sock so he can get his “urges” out

Spaying is a big no no. Only if there is something medically wrong with your baby or she struggles every time to lay eggs. Bearded dragons are relatively easier than most reptiles when it comes to laying eggs, it isn't quite as stressful for them like it say a chameleon.

Just make sure you provide a laying bin if she starts trying to dig or anything like that.
