smelly poo

so i've mentioned before that my guys have really smelly poo. my friend has 7 beardies and she says none of their poo smells too bad. i talked to our local reptile guy and he mentioned getting a wormer from the pet store. i figured i'd ask on here first. it's just so expensive to bring my guys into the vet for a check-up and fecals. 200 bucks for both. is there something i can buy at the pet store, or online? preferably, in stores? i don't have a job where i can make 200 bucks a week, more like every 3 weeks. so i'm kinda stuck trying the cheap, easy way first.

also, i am now faced with 2 boy beardies, one of which has a female name. poor m'lynn. he'll be stuck with a lady name forever.

You've had fecals run on them recently?

What is their diet?

no they've never had medical attention. crickets twice a day, about 25+ each feeding. dusted once a day with calcium +D3 5 days a week. dusted with vitamins once a day on the weekend. salad daily. it consists of collard, mustard greens and escarole, and just recently started putting a little bit of squash in it. once in awhile they'll have waxworms. maybe once or twice a month.

The only thing about doing it the cheap way is you don't know what kind of parasites or if they even have any to treat. Not all wormers work for all parasites. Panacur works for pinworms and roundworms only I think. I have never seen Panacur in a petstore. A farm and feed store carries it. But what if they have something else? You would be giving the wrong med. I know it's not cheap to take two beardies in. I have three now. I do my own fecals. I am kinda anal, in that I want to know what I am dealing with before I treat.

so can i give them panacur to see if it clears it up, and if not, take them in and have it done the right way? will the panacur hurt them if they don't have worms?

I would get a fecal ran. As pointed out, you need to know what kind of parasites are present, if any. You can usually get a vet to run a fecal for about 25 bucks.

You do not want to treat your animal without knowing what it has. Sending fecals out through the mail is a bad idea as it can mess up your results. I highly suggest getting a fecal ran by a vet once you get the results of what it is and how numerous (a count) then you can post it and someone should be able to assist you with medicating. But I highly suggest against giving panacur to your dragon prior to knowing what it has.

I agree. You never want to blindly treat anything. The de-wormer that you talk about for dogs are not a cure-all for them either. They only work for specific worms. Meds can kill if overdosed or given without need.
The panacur and albon and now panazuril that are used to treat various parasites in dragons need very specific dosages.

If you want to do it yourself you can find all the supplies and info on how to do everything except a culture here http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Fecaltest.html

You need a centrifuge to do a true parasite culture to get the number reading that they speak about. But you can get a good idea with just a microscope and a chart. Be careful and if you're unsure consult a vet. The people at that link I provided are very helpful if you have any questions.

Brian is correct about mailing me a fecal. It won't do any good as the fecal would be to old. Not all vets use a centrifuge for parasites. A float is good. I can get a pretty accurate count and know when to treat.

That website that Ric posted is a good one but I don't recommend their microscopes. I ended getting one vet's use. But I have horrible eyesite.

i'm just gonna save up my money. it might take a month. i'm gonna see if they can do some sort of payment plan. also gonna ask if i can get them both in on the same visit for the same price. it'd be 150 dollars just to get them into the appointment if they made me pay separately. then 37 dollars per fecal. then medicine, if needed. *sigh*

Yeah if you need glasses you need a focusing eyepiece. That raises the prices. y ou can find one on ebay or maybe even craigslist
