Hello, I just joined this forum because I got a bearded dragon just last week. I need some help, he is very scared from me. He hides in his cave during the day, so I take it away so he can bask on the log. When I move around in my room, he crouches down and tries to hide. I don't know how to gain his trust. He is about 3 weeks old. Please help!

Welcome to the forum! I moved this to it's own thread so more people could see it.

Your bearded dragon is probably going through some "moving sickness". When they are brought into a new home they tend to need a few weeks or more to adjust to their new surroundings. They might be fine when you first then them home but once they realize they aren't going anywhere they tend to get a little scared.

One thing that is going to help him settle in is to cover 3 sides of his tank so he can't see everything that is going on around out side the tank. It will help him feel a bit more secure. You can also put something of yours that you've worn that has your scent on it (not perfume or cologne) so he can get used to your smell. Another important step is try not to handle him so much as he is settling in. When you pick him up make sure you don't go over his head but scoop him up from underneath and support his legs and tail with your other hand. Give him some time and he will be crawling all over you in no time!

I received a notice from someone that is having trouble bonding. Their baby is hiding. While I didn't experience that at first my girl is now letting me know she doesn't want to be bothered. I have found that just after I mist her that if I let her bask until she is dry she will climb on my hand. She also comes to me just before I put the dubias in her dish and will climb on me and bond that way. I have so much info from so many on here and also from the breeder I have met with in my town. Just don't give up and keep trying with your baby. My understanding is this is not unusual with little ones. My breeders babies will pretty much go to anyone because he handles them a lot but that is not always the case. Omynite just keep trying and if your not feeding him dubia roaches try that...they really love them and are much easier to keep than the cricket. Just a little new experience from a new owner. Let me know how it goes. Send us a pic of your baby.

Yep it just takes some time and patience.. Gotta remember we look like giants to them especially when they are baby babies. Yes cover 3 sides and give them hiding places to feel secure. Feeding from tongs and then from your fingers to build trust.. But with every dragon it is different, so just go slow and talk quietly and slow movements..And in time you'll have that trusted bond for a lifetime.
I've been lucky that both of mine have been easy to handle from the very start...
Oh and don't back down if they open their mouths or try and bite that way they can't think well if I try and bite them they will leave me alone...

Sweet baby talk voice . My Hef gets love eyes when I talk to him really sweet. Your guy is really young it will get better once he knows everything is stable and he's safe. At night let him cool down a bit because they're less alert and hold him on your chest .I fold a pillowcase and put Hef in there and he knocks out. Alot of us tuck in our guys at night like this. He'll get to trusting you soon.
