Helo as stated in topic, my beardiehas had runny stool this week after changing from mustard greens to spinach. She is pretty young (not sure how old) but still growing and eating and sleeping like normal. Any suggestions?
Dandelion Greens /or collard greens are far better than Spinach. Spinach and romain lettuce can do that.. it's high in oxalates and goitrogens . Go to WWW.beautifuldragons.com and read the nutritional page..all the info is there.
Well changes in diet can affect their stool. I do want to point out that spinach is not that great of a veggie. mustards/collards are far superior health wise for a staple.
Your dragons activity hasnt changed at all? Do you have access to a vet? As a precaution i suggest getting a fecal sample checked out by a vet to rule out parasites.
As Michele pointed out, spinach has oxalate issues in that it causes calcium absorption to be lowered. With proper UV light and temps, it is said to be ok if offered on occasion and not as a staple.
Can you tell us a bit more about your beardie -
How long have you had her?
What UV light do you have?
What is your temp on the hot side?
What is the temp on your cool side?
What are you using to measure your temp?
What is her daily diet - protein and salad?
What substrate do you have?
I have had beardie since Jan 6th 2010 and the substrate is tile, basking side avg 106-110 with digital probe thermometer, cool side 80-85, yes I have UV light and did not see runny poop until spinach. S/he eats the spinach better than the mustard greens that I was giving her. Eyes are good, s/he has already had one complete shed since I got her. I put mustard greens back in there tonight after cricket hunt.
You can switch up the greens but spinach is not suggested. here is a comprehensive list of good/bad/and ugly foods.http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html
I think that the diet change is the cause of the runny stool but it would not hurt to have a fecal exam run.
if you cant get a very fresh sample. you can take a sample 24 hours prior to visiting the vet. Just put it in a ziploc baggie, seal it up, and set it in the fridge. no longer than 24 hours though. but the fresher the better.
