So Rex ie Trex wasnt actually a male it seems - haha !! Rex had about 26 eggs about a month ago and the last few days was digging in the bottom of the terrarium so I made a box with play sand 70% / organic topsoil 30% and she went in today and laid several more eggs... I dont think I got a big enough box, my wife came home and noticed she was trapped inside as she moved all the mix around and blocked the exit.. Ive opened the lid but shes still in there and wont come out.. How long do they need to be in a box

and for the record we now call her Rexa - or my wife calls her Rexalita !!! :)

So following up on the above - Im considering adding the play sand / topsoil as a ground level addition instead of using the black mat Im currently using. If I put like 2-3 Inches and maybe a hill like 6-8 inches in would that be ok as substrate ? Im just tired of cleaning this damn thing out all the time when she poops, so it might make cleaning easier ?? Not sure - thoughts ??

She finally came out and I decided to make an area that she can dig in and lay eggs.. This look ok to do something like this - she still needs a bath ...

I am not savvy on the setup so I have reached out to someone better experience w/ the egg laying / substrate thing -- congratulations on the grandparents thing LOL :)

When they dig and look blocked in that's what they do to " hide " and the instinct is to make sure their eggs are safe, so it's normal and they can definitely get back out. Remember, in the wild the babies hatch and dig up + out of packed dirt. She could use a bigger though, box set up like that .
