Hi I got a new bearded dragon yesterday he is beautiful and I was attracted to his slight red coloration through his body, I got him as a friend for my leather back beardie who is female.

I'm very new to the bearded dragon world and am learning as I go along, they are both getting on fine it took a few hours of arm waving and dissing one another out but they now sit side by side in the basking spot...

They are both very young but I noticed red dots on my new dragon, I've been reading up on it online and think it may be mites ??

Can anyone please help, they are not moving and have bit dropped off while bathing and I cannot get them to come off either.

I'm bit sure if it's his coloration or is it mites...

Any advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated, please go easy on me as I am a newbie, and I'm desperately worried about my new babies as I have had a bad experience to start off with.

Cheers guys and gals,

Colin

There seems to b a problem with posting pics at the min. Josh is on it tho:) firstly i just a little pointer. They shudnt b house togetha at any age really unless mating this can cause a lot of stress n altho u mite think theu ok n gettin on they really dnt like each other company they dnt stay together in rhe wild. Even the babies dnt stay with there mum. As for the spots im unsure. It cud b a few thinks colouring , stuck shed, cricket bites if u feed them crix. Mites. Did u take a poop sample to the vet when u got him to check for things like mite n parasites?

Thank you for the info I will get another viv, I guess I just wanted them to have company, but I value your advice and will act on it...

As soon as I am able to put pics up I will, as for the crickets , as soon as I put them in the two of them are running around eating them all up, and I always make sure the viv is cricket / locust / salad free 2 hours before turning off the lights..

They are great eaters and very active, I have not noticed him scratching and there is no red dots on the female at all and I can't see any in the viv anywhere or on the logs..

We don't have an exotic vet in Plymouth but I do believe we have a vet that will look at him so I will see about providing a stool sample as you suggested..

Thank you for your response,

Colin :)

Well brought George into the reptile pet shop and Andy the owner was great he confirmed it was mites and has taken him in for a 24hr treatment and has also offered to take Bella in also even though she has no symptoms...

That way I have an empty viv to clean and prep for their return tomorrow.

The level of service from them is excellent I can't thank them enough...

I still intend on sending a stool sample into the vet though he had a pooh on way to pet shop and awh does my car stink lol...

Thanks for taking time to read and for also offering advice and experiences it's been of great help guys ;-)

Yeah that's right they are a great pet shop but they specialise in reptiles only so I guess that's why they are so good...

I'm thinking of offering voluntary work on my holidays to get to learn more about the little guys and other reptiles :)

One of the new members on the forum is having a situation with bugs in her tank. When your bearded dragons had mites could you see them crawling around the tank? She said she saw a little white bug crawling on the glass and then she saw a tiny red bug in the tank. None of the bugs were on her beardie though.

AHA! I found the forum Patsy, obviously, lol. Colin it sucks that you are having to deal with that, sorry. I'm glad the pet store is nice and willing to help. My situation is the opposite. My girl Sachi is a rescue that I just got yesterday, someone abandoned her. Anyhow on mine there are not noticible bugs on her and I tore apart her tank and sterilized everything, but a little bit earlier I found a tiny red bug crawling on the wall inside her tank. As far as I can tell it's just the one and I'm trying to figure out where it came from and if it is indeed a mite. This one is like a little red dot and it crawls real fast. Looks like the tiny red bugs that you see outside on the concrete sometimes. Is that what yours looked like?

Thanks Colin. It's hard to be sure, but I don't see any of that on my Sachi. It was just one lone little bug. But I know what to keep an eye out for when I look her over now. Hope you get your beardie back soon!
