I adopted a BD that was surrendered to an animal shelter. Former owner says he's about 6 months old. He's about 16" long. I upgraded his terrarium and have been buying him more "furniture". LOL. I have some seasoned hardwood. Would that be safe to put in with him? Thanks!

I'm attaching a pic of Earl. :)

You need to bake it to kill what ever is living inside- 275 - 300 for like a hour or so
Sadie thats way to hot and way to long, 200f is quite sufficient, 300 will burn the wood. And you only need to keep it in there for 10-20 minutes to kill off anything bad, ive put lots of pieces of wood ive collected in the oven at those Parameters and have success.

This degrees was posted on another forum if the 200 is working thats good - I have not heard of anyone burning the wood at that degree but if the 200 is working then thats great -

Oct 23, 2012 — The best way to disinfect pretty much anything is to bake it in the oven at 300° for at least 30 minutes. If it's wood (especially dry wood) ...
this info came from this site

I did look up on multiple sites before i replied to you, idk why everyone’s recommending 300 for 30-60 minutes, thats way too long for wood to be in an oven, it must be for “fresh green wood” because i have tried 300 before and after 15 minutes it was smoking pretty good :/

Heres what AHBD said about how she does it

I've done it at 225-250 for [ preheated to that temp.] and the length of time depends on the wood thickness. If it's a branch type piece, I leave it in for about 45 minutes. If it's a thicker log I do for about an hour or a little more.

Thanks for all the replies! The web seems to have mixed opinions on this, too. LOL. Looks like it heavily depends on the size of the stick/wood.

If I may... In biopharmaceutical, we use SIP (steam in place) processes to kill all forms of microbes. This is achieved with 80c steam. 176F for us americans. Wood can ignite in the mid 200s, so I would personally feel safer with 185F for a longer duration, maybe the hour. And as a word of caution to folks reading this and wanting to apply this process to other materials. Always be cautious with stone, as it can heat unevenly, and burst in you oven, or even your hands when removing.
