If he's doing it in his basking spot, then it's not a problem. It is known as 'gaping' which means he is regulating his body temperature.

Yep, they do it to regulate their body temps. But frequent gaping could mean the temps are too hot or too cold. What are your hot and cold side temps? What do you use to measure your temps?

the cold side reads any where from 70 to 80 the hot side i do not have a thermometer on i am getting one tomorrow i have learned a lot on this site

Make sure you get a digital thermometer. The sticky ones can be up to 20* off.
