New here. My Beardie has been making “puffing” sounds lately. Like she’s releasing air. She’s never done this before. She acts normal. What can it be?

Hey,
I may not be able to help, but a few Q’s:
Is she shedding at the moment?
Any discharge from the eyes/nose/mouth?
Whats the humidity in her viv? - x

Not shedding and she has no discharge. Her tank is usually 90 during the day and about 70 at night with the ceramic heat bulb. I spray her with water from time to time when she is shedding, but no humidity otherwise.

It’s best you get a digital hygrometer (this will measure the humidity in the vivarium and they’re pretty cheap). It’s good she had no discharge or clear signs of illness minus the puffing sounds.

How old is your beardie? Do you have a digital probe thermometer resting directly on the basking spot? And one in the cool side? If not it’s worth getting two so you can leave them there and ensure your temps are always what they should be :)

Could you let us know what you’re using for UVA & UVB? x

I don’t have any of those. I use the ceramic lamps and bulbs from PetSmart. She’s 4yrs old. I’ve never used anything to monitor the humidity and she’s done fine until now. The side she is sleeping on is the basking side and where her food is, is her cool side.

Ok, this is not good. I think you’ve been advised really poorly. Pet shops often do this because they are just trying to make money. And sometimes when people have insufficient or improper set ups they think everything is all good until BOOM - super super poorly beardie. Even zooming in on that pic your beardie doesn’t look great, eyes look kinda swollen and dark beard area. I’m not a pro or a vet and would never claim to know it all but there’s a lot wrong here and your beardie will only get sicker.

Correct UVA & UVB are vital. Colour bulbs are bad, coiled UVB bulbs are bad. If when you say ceramic lamps you mean ceramic heat emitters, they’re good for night time temps if your viv is dropping below 18 degrees Celsius but not adequate for the day. You also need something to measure your exact temps, stick ons are really inaccurate and basically useless. Digital probe thermometers are cheap and very important. If you’d like to save your beardie we are happy to help and offer more advice.

I would book in a vet appointment ASAP for your beardie and then go from there. Or in the meantime you can start ordering bits you need to help him thrive and survive - x

Would u describe the sound as a hiccup? Or cough? Or a fast shallow breath? Please listen to everyone about your lights, temps ,and humidity, take out the water dish im 99% certain hes never even looked at it, get a spray bottle or a dropper and give your beardie water that way(spray only the very front where his lips part eventually hell lick and thats ur chance to spray into his mouth, dropper: drip water on top of his nose wait for it to recede then more eventually they’ll turn away when their done ) is that carpet in ur tank? You might want that out as well beardies nails can get caught in them, do a heavy clean of the tank aswell .

It’s a exhale puff out. If that makes sense. I’m taking care of the other issues today. Not carpet it’s turf and we’ve never had issues with it. She does pay attention to her water. She will go to it when she’s thirsty mainly after she eats. She isn’t lethargic or not eating. No huge signs just the puff of air out. She’s very alert and responds well. Active as she always has been.

Hmm that is odd. How many times has she done this? Does it happen every day? Does her tank get any kind of outside stimulation? Is the turf glued to the bottom? Id take everything out and do a thorough clean to make sure there’s no mold , Id still remove the water dish (you can put it back in when its mealtime) Also i dont know if someone already mentioned this but im just now realizeing it , you need at the very least a background in side the tank , reflections are a huge stresser for bearded dragons, just cause shes been fine for 2 years doesnt mean she wont appreciate having that “second dragon” gone , you can put up paper in the meantime if you so desire.

Ok. I clean her tank once a week. Usually on Saturdays and wash her turf as well in just warm soapy water. No detergent. Let me clear this up too. I’ve had her for 4 years going on 5. We got her from a friend who had her for 3. So she’s almost 8. The o my thing I changed when we got her was they had sand I took that out and just have had turf. I’ll add a background to my list of things. Thank you
