I have recently (within the last few months) taken on a bearded dragon that was kept in horrible conditions for a long time. No light, water, food, heat etc for months on end in a dark closet. All of those conditions sent him into brumation which essentially saved his life. He was very malnourished and dehydrated when I got him and he is slowly putting on more weight. However, awhile ago I noticed two small bumps behind his legs that protrude when he shows his belly. He has a habit of trying (and sometimes succeeding) at jumping off of tall places. So my worry is, are these bumps broken ribs? Or is he just showing bone protrusions because he is underweight?

In the photo I linked you can see one of them on his belly. He freaks out when I try to see his belly so this is the best photo I have for now.

Bless you for taking him in - can you get a pic of the back w/ his legs that your talking about and his ribs -- I can have a vet tech look at him and some one else that is very experienced w/ dragons--- please add weight to him slowly you dont want him gaining it too fast -- here is a website for nutrition the kale info is incorrect its a good staple feeder to feed -- how old is the dragon? Please make sure you have a good UVB no coils please you want a long tube fixture like a Zoo Med and depending on the size of the tank it going to determine fixture length 24" fixtures are T 5's that is what he needs or a Arcadia Pro T 5 w/ a 12% bulb they are some of the best on the market now-- what size tank do you have him in? I can post links to those if you need --- also you need 2 digital probe thermometers one on the cool side of the tank one on the basking side of the tank - you need surface basking temps 95-100 -- a solid clear bright white basking examples are Exo Terra Intense basking bulb or a Zoo Med Repti basking bulb - you can use any solid bright white bulb just no coils no colored or off white or Daytime bulbs - the daytime bulbs have the neodymium coating which is a rare earth mineral, decreases the CRI or Color Rendering Index which affects the overall brightness. It does this by cutting the yellow color range out to make it appear brighter but since reptiles are very sensitive to light & can see more of the spectrum than we can it is best to use a bright white light for basking instead.
The substrate I would change out please - loose substrate is not real good - impaction issues and bacteria issues -- some textured NON adhesive shelf liner would be good at this time -- cut to the size of the tank -- insects cannot get underneath - clean w/ vinegar / water 50/50 --- we can go over his diet if you like --- please be dusting the staple insect w/ calcium D3 -- I would like one of the people I mentioned to you above to address the supplements for him --
