First time dragon owner here. Without researching I bought the 36x18x36 Exo Terra tank. I now realize that may have been a mistake and should have went for length vs height..... I REALLY need help figuring out the correct lighting for this tank. Any recommendations?

Can you take it back? That would be my first move if possible. If not, your going to want all lights inside or some real high basking spot with a stong bulb. Does it have the front opening doors?

For UVB a 24" Arcadia 14% would be first choice if above top screen. If mounted inside a 24" HO5 Arcadia 12% will work. For a basking bulb on top of screen depend on distance to basking spot. Should be 8 to 10". A 75 watt might work. For heat at night a 50 watt CHE should work if temps in house stay above 60. If not a 75 watt might be needed or a 100 watt.

Its something you have to play with. Get a good temp gun to get accurate temps.

That's a nice size tank for some tree frogs! I would try to take it back or keep it, get some tree frogs and then get the proper size for the dragon :)

Thank you for your replies and recommendations. Unfortunately we are unable to return it, we bought it from a reptile store that will not take returns. We have spent over $400 already. It has the front opening door and the top is screen but has plastic crossing through the middle (hope that makes sense) I'll need to remove the plastic/screen top and buy a hooded for the lights?

Mine has the plastic bars, just make sure your basking light goes between the bars and doesn’t rest on them, it won’t melt. The UVB doesn’t put off a whole lot of heat so it can rest on the bars.

I’m not home so I can only show you a view of what they look like from the inside of the tank

I have been looking into this light.... You think this whole set up would work well with the dimensions of my tank?

Thanks guys. Decided to get the Arcadia 14% bulb/T-5 HO Fixture, with a 100 watt deep dish for heat, gonna build up the basking spot... I have a temp gun so can adjust as needed. One more question, do you think a CHE is absolutely needed? We live in Florida and rarely does the temps in our house get below 70, the cold nights we end up turning the heat on because we are wussies - lol.

You probably don’t need a CHE. I live in Chicago and have never used one for my dragons even when it was below zero out. We keep the house around 69/70 degrees at night. The lowest the tanks have ever got was 63 and the dragons were okay.
