Hi there, I got my beardie (his name is Lance) back in February. He’s never enjoyed my holding him so I never really do so I don’t cause un-needed stress. However tonight I went to pet him and he bit me. Any ideas.. I want to provide him the best possible life and I don’t know what to do

Ok you should of been hand taming him long before now-- hand taming by putting your hands in the tank as much as possible - hand feeding-- a piece of cloth or blanket in his hide-w/ your scent on it hand feeding is the best- it gets them to learn to trust you-- sometimes lighting and basking temps can also make them aggressive so please tell me what the basking temps are how your taking them no stickons uvb coil or tube brand and bulb where in the tank -- any colored bulbs?

hi thanks for reaching out.. I have 2 temp gauges in his terrarium, one on the warmer side one on the cooler. They are the temp gauges that came with his terrarium. No colored bulbs. Just the UVB and the Basking bulb. I’ve never had a beardie before, any advice is helpful. I want to do everything right. He will eat out of my hand if I have a cricket, cucumber or what have you

Stick ons are inaccurate-- you need a digital probe thermometer- UVB is a coil or tube? Brand and bulb? How old is Lance? Approx 9 months old I am guessing! If he's a juvie his temps should be 95-110 basking- these questions I am asking are extremely important- I can help you w/ feeding tips

Thank you for the help, UVB is from Repti-sun 10.0 uvb I attached photo I believe this one is a coil? And according to the stick on (which may not be accurate since they aren’t) during the day he’s at 95-97 and at night 70 I got him near the middle of February of this year. So yes around 9 months

Please get rid of the coil--- this bulb is inadequate-- you need to get a tube fixture-- for a 40+ gallon tank you will need a 24" w/ a reflector-- and a Reptisun 10.0 T 5 or a Arcadia 12% bulb--- I am going to post some info on UVB's and where you can get this fixture --

Which UVB light should I use?

The best UVB light is a ReptiSun 10.0 fluorescent tube HO (Or Arcardia 12% in the UK). Compact or coil bulbs do not emit the proper amount of UVB light for a bearded dragon, and should not be used. Other brands, such as the Zilla Desert Series and ReptiGlo have been known to cause eye problems and other health issues with bearded dragons, and should be avoided. The reason that some UVB lights (Zilla, ReptiGlo, coils/compacts, ect.) are considered dangerous is because the wavelength of UVB that they emit is shorter and more intense than the wavelength of the "safe" lights (ReptiSun, Arcadia). UVB lights should be replaced every 6 months. The T5’s are a strong bulb and only need to be replaced once a year – the T 8 every 6 months--- where as the T 8 are not as strong—they need to be placed inside the tank the T 5 10.0 bulb approx 12-15 inches from basking spot – the T 8 approx 6-8 inches from basking spot—the cover needs to be off the bulb for full effect of the UVB rays--
This website has the fixture and the bulb that you need
https://www.reptilesupplyco.com/t5-...00-uvb-t5-ho-fluorescent-bulb-22-zoo-med.html
or this one
I would call them and find out how soon they are shipping out some places are really slow and my go to places are sold out of the fixtures and bulbs --
I would recommend you get this ordered ASAP --- or try and find it where you live --- at this point hes getting no UVB -- also I would recommend getting him outside for some good UVB -- place him in a plastic tote set him in direct sunlight / partial shade for 15 minutes NO longer you dont want to burn him and supervise him --- you can do this a couple times / day until you get the new UVB --- let me know what you are doing and I can help you get the UVB placed properly in the tank --
Feeding tips --- here is a website for nutrition - ignore the kale thing its a good staple feeder
https://www.beardeddragon.org/useruploads/
Please no more cucumbers or feed sparingly -- he needs greens mustard collard turnip or kale - please look at the website I posted ---
What are you feeding him besides crickets and cucumbers? I can give you some websites to order insects/ worms etc -- he needs a variety in diet -- I can post them tomorrow but you need to get the UVB replaced and get a digital probe to get a actual basking temp --- you need a bright white basking bulb that keeps temps 95-110-- get the probe first before you do any changing w/ the basking bulb - you dont want to burn him up by going to a higher wattage w/ checking what the basking temp is

First off, thank you so much. I tried to do research before I got him but I didn’t know any of this. His diet is crickets (large) like 40 week and then I keep fresh carrots, cucumber, tomato and things like that in there every day

Here are some websites for insects/ worms

www.reptilianarts.com they have roaches and silk worms - you would need a container for the roaches if ordering from here - you can keep them in a 10 gallon aquarium and feed them dubia food along w/ carrots for hydration and squash - do not feed the dragon carrots as well too much Vit A -- the silk worms if you buy cupped come w/ food - I usually get bulk like 50 when in stock they come small and no food so if you ever order like that make sure you get food to feed them and clean containers out daily-- silk worms are a great staple feeder -- these people are pretty fast at getting orders out
www.dubiaroaches.com they have great roaches and come in plastic containers so you can keep them in there - they also have super worms and nice horn worms - the horn worms are a hydrating worm and they really fast so order small amounts - they have nutri grubs which are the same as BSFL phoenix worms and calci worms
www.mulberryfarms.com they usually carry silk worms but are out of stock now they have butter worms of which are the only place that I know of that has them now - horn worms BSFL and super worms -- these people are spendy on shipping and really slow now at getting orders out 2-3 weeks out
www.symptonbsf.com
www.coastalsilkworms.com they have places on east coast and west coast

The CHE if that is what your talking about needs a dome w/ ceramic socket so if your dual dome has that it should be good - does that dual dome have separate on and off switches? You dont want to run that CHE unless your tank is falling below 65 at nite or / and you cant get your basking temps to where they need to be -- you want your basking bulb to be able to do that on its own w/ out having to run that CHE if that is what your talking about -- I use a single dome for my basking bulb and a single dome for my CHE -- my CHE sits on the top of my tanks w/ it in the middle of the tank and is only run in the winter time 24/7- I live in the midwest so it gets really cold here in the winter - my CHE's keep my tanks in the 70's in the winter time --
