Hello!

10 days ago we got a year and a half old bearded dragon from my son's friend and it's been a rough go of it so far! He was raised with his brother, but they had to be separated due to fighting. The previous owner provided a complete setup including a 20 gallon tank (which we just replaced with a 40 gallon tank), a basking log and hide, a natural fiber hammock, food and water bowls, a hood, Fluker's adult blend food for adults, mealworms, a ReptiSun 5.0 UVB light, a 100 watt ceramic heating bulb that stays on 24 hours a day, and tank carpet. When we got the larger tank, we switched to a 10.0 UVB light and added a 100 watt ZooMed Repti basking spot lamp. The temperature is 95 degrees on the warm side and 80 degrees on the cool side, and the humidity is right around 40.

Since we got him 10 days ago, he has been given a wide variety of foods including calcium dusted crickets, mealworms, the "buffet blend" of commercially made food, collard greens, sweet peppers, shredded carrots, tomatoes, blueberries, and grapes (all shredded or cut into tiny pieces). We have not seen him eat a single thing...alive or dead, since he's been with us. The crickets would walk right in front of him or crawl on him and he acted like he didn't know they were there. We tried offering him food with tongs, and again, showed no interest.

His activity level has been extremely low, and he routinely stays in one place without moving for up to 12 hours. He had been moving around a tiny bit, but only for a few seconds at a time. He is generally very lethargic. When picked up, he will wiggle a bit, and he does like to cuddle and look out the window. He has had 2 baths which he didn't care for, but he did poop in 1 of the baths. He's not shedding other than a tiny piece here and there in his tank.

Since I was so worried about him being lethargic and not eating, I got him in to see an exotic animal vet last Wednesday. They were very concerned about his size and said he should be at least double the size he is at his age. I contacted the previous owners and they said he is actually the bigger of the brothers. They described him as being the biggest couch potato ever and said his activity level has always been very low. The vet examined him, did bloodwork, and x-rays, and found that his RBC and calcium levels are low and his WBC is high. They gave him shots of calcium and vitamins, and sent him home with Carafate for nausea, Fortaz antibiotic injections, and Oxbow Critical Care to feed him by syringe. They said I've done everything I should have been doing.

We have seen no change in activity level. He started taking the syringe feeding a lot better today and actually opened his mouth. He developed diarrhea Saturday. Yesterday, he was unsteady on his feet and began wobbling when he walked. My son actually thought he was dancing, but it definitely wasn't a dance. Today, he has deteriorated to the point that he actually falls over when standing or walking, and he keeps falling off his log hide and hammock. Now he isn't able to climb onto his hammock or log without falling over and he can't get himself back upright. It is truly heartbreaking...

I took in a fecal sample to the vet this afternoon to be tested, but they weren't able to see him. The vet called a little bit ago after viewing the videos I e-mailed to him of the dragon trying to walk and falling. He talked about it definitely being neurological and suspected it could be viral. I'm taking him in to be seen first thing in the morning. The vet was mentioning different treatments and care he may need, but he also said it really doesn't look good.

Has anyone else ever seen or heard of anything like this? We've only had him 10 days, but we are very attached to him. He's quickly become our baby and we really don't want to lose him...

Thank you!

That is terrible that poor dragon - that is from incorrect uvb-- I am not sure if we can help him-- I have enlisted help
This video has me in tears- I will get back w/ you as soon as I hear -- please make him as comfortable as possible and he needs a UVB a Arcadia 12% bulb in a 24" fixture w/ reflector--- it needs to be inside the tank directly over him distance 12 -15 inches I recommend 12"+- get him outside for direct sunlight put him in the grass do not leave him outside time for as long as you can stand the heat-- he probably will never recover from this- but I am going to get you some help

Thank you, Sadie! Is this something that's happened in just the 10 days we've had him or has he had incorrect lighting his whole life and the stress of the move brought on the quick deterioration?

His whole life-- it started when he was a baby the 5.0 bulb was/ is good but it needs to be properly placed in order for it to be of any good- did he have the T 8 on top of a screen-- ? Was he housed w/ the other dragon in a 20 gallon tank? That would also account for him having mbd-- the other dragon took over all the UVB and basking temps--- you do not need the che if his tank is above 65 at nite--- they like cool and dark -- you need basking temps 95-110 taken w/ a digital probe thermometer- no stick ons they are inaccurate-- at this point I am so sad to see this happen- what is the 10.0 uvb your using now? Coil or tube?

All of his lights were on top of the screen. Both dragons were in the same 20 gallon tank. I'm using a digital hand held digital thermometer. The bulb I just got is a coil. I've been reading nonstop since we got him, but I hadn't figured the part about using tube lights instead of coil lights until now. I am so sad for him and so upset that he wasn't cared for properly for the 1st year and a half of his life...

Please get rid of that coil ASAP-- that is a horrible bulb-- please get what I recommended- it is the best uvb you can get for him now-- two dragons in a 20 gallon tank? I am at a loss for words at this time-- what is the other dragon in now and if he's using a T 8 tube it needs to exposed no screen or plastic cover over the bulb and it needs to replaced every 6 months and it needs to be 6-8 inches from basking decor- in the meantime shut the coil off take him outside for some good UVB supervise him - let him sit on you for a good 30 minutes everyday till you get the UVB replaced- the coil is bad! That's all I can say especially for him--

Hello, I agree with most of the things that Sadie has said but if Sadie has not already said it. I would take your bearded dragon to a vet, they can help you out more. As they are professionals and they can also give calcium shots and special food that can help.

She's going to need a good reptile vet here is a website you can use to find one in your area www.arav.org
You can get liquid calcium as well - I would inquire about that at the vet---

Thank you. I will get the UVB tube lighting setup tomorrow after we see the vet. I'll definitely pass the information on to the former owner so he can save the brother of my dragon. I don't know how receptive he'll be because both he and his wife got pretty defensive when I called from the vet's office last week to get more info about their history. I have no idea what they have the brother in now, but I do know he's even smaller than mine is!

We do have vets here who specialize in exotics and reptiles. My dragon got a calcium shot and vitamin shot there last week. We're heading there first thing in the morning to see what can they can do.

I appreciate everyone's help and input, and we thank you for being so committed to helping out bearded dragons and their parents!

Hi, I’ve never posted on here before but had to say I had a 3 month old dragon start acting exactly the same way about a year ago. She had been raised on a Reptisun 10.0 T8 bulb and as soon as I got her I had her in a 40 gal with a T5 Arcadia 12% bulb under mounted. I knew she’d produce enough d3 with that type of uv exposure so I dusted everything with a calcium supplement with very low d3. Well, within a week of getting her she was wobbling and falling over and falling off her log and rock. I was so sad because I felt I’d done everything right. I sent videos to the breeder and she calling around to fellow breeders and vets she trusted. They came to the conclusion that it was an excess of vit d3. After a few days of not giving anything with d3 she was doing much better.
Also, I have to say Fortaz is generally given for a respiratory infection. Did your guy show signs of an RI? Their little bodies can only handle so much, especially when they are malnourished and haven’t been cared for properly.

Kristina, he was gagging like he was choking on something initially. It was almost as if he was regurgitating food because he'd chew and swallow a lot even though he wasn't eating anything. He also had a lot of saliva around his mouth that was bubbling. That with the elevated WBC led them to believe it may have been an infection.

Thanks, Rex!
